Fashion Symposium: Bringing Preserving Manufacturing in the City!

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer is holding a symposium to discuss solutions, pose questions and solve problems within the manufacturing Industry.

This is an amazing opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes for job preservation and creation and boosting our local economy through Industries.Be a part of the solution, join the conversation. See below for more details:

How to preserve manufacturing in the city—a symposium.

Manufacturing has changed a lot since the passage of the city’s current zoning resolution in 1961. Some manufacturers moved out of the city entirely and new ones have sprung up. Google now houses its workers in a former Nabisco factory in West Chelsea. But for manufacturers that remain, the challenges are significant.
One example: Manhattan’s Garment Center has been a hub for designers, suppliers, media and manufacturers for decades. But the city’s Economic Development Corporation and the Mayor are advancing a plan that would repeal zoning protections for garment manufacturing and offer subsidies to relocate in Brooklyn. I think this plan will break up what’s left of the Garment Center’s ecosystem in a way that will hasten its demise—and many Garment Center business owners are concerned, too. I’ve asked the EDC to hold off on it’s proposal. See my letter to the EDC here.
My office is bringing together manufacturers, business owners, workers, urban planners and community members for a “Symposium on Urban Manufacturing.” We’ll discuss the needs of manufacturers in multiple sectors – what they’re making, what kinds of spaces they need, and how zoning can help or hurt them. The issues surrounding the Garment Center will, of course, be one of our topics.
On Monday, April 24, from 4 – 7 pm at the High School of Fashion Industries, 225 West 24th St., bring an open mind, your own ideas, and help us come up with some actionable ideas for helping manufacturing thrive again. Please RSVP at Advisory.eventbrite.com.
