HSFI HOLIDAY SPIRIT!!!!!!

Simon Doonan and Fox 5 Celebrate the Holiday Window Unveiling!!

Congratulations to the visual students and Ms. Selleck who did a marvelous job on the Holiday Windows. You truly outdid yourselves!

Library News and Notes by Ms. Dahill, Librarian 12.16.2015

Exciting new titles thanks to HSFI Advisory Board:

·         Alexander McQueen: genius of a generation by Kristin Knox. Color photographs showcase the work of fashion designer Alexander McQueen, featuring selections ranging from the spring/summer collection of 1995 through fall/winter 2010.

·        Scaasi: a cut above by Bernadine Morris
With former New York Times fashion editor Morris, fashion designer Scaasi looks back over his glittering career. Born Arnold Isaacs, the son of a Montreal fur merchant, he first made his mark in 1955 when, at the age of 20, he revolutionized the American fashion industry with luxurious imported fabrics and dramatic designs featuring almond-shaped coats and split-level jackets. Changing his name to Scaasi (Isaacs spelled backwards), he quickly rose to fame, first with ready-to-wear creations and later with extravagant couture for women willing to spend $6000 -$20,000 for a dress-stars such as Joan Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor; socialites Charlotte Ford, Blaine Trump and Brooke Astor. First ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Barbara Bush have been dressed by him. Replete with 100 color photographs of models and celebrities wearing the designer's exuberant clothes, this lavish book, which includes brief descriptions of Scaasi's working methods and accounts of his friendships with his affluent clients, provides a tantalizing glimpse of the world of high fashion.

·         Lanvin by Dean L. Merceron  Review from Elle.com 10.2007
Alber Elbaz's most recent collection for Lanvin was an inspired study in romance, fluidity, and, maybe most importantly, winning the hearts (and checkbooks) of every buyer and editor in town. His flowing gowns and intricately embroidered dresses were also celebrated for their ability to reference the house's history while still moving very much forward. A new book by Dean L. Merceron, out next week, traces the ever-progressive history of Lanvin, from its founding in 1909 by Jeanne Lanvin up to the current reign of Elbaz, with a focus on the key collections from the first half of the twentieth century. The book is overflowing with images of gowns culled from the atelier's archive, collectors, and museums, giving a visual history to one of the most influential labels in French fashion, then and now. Harold Koda, chief curator of the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, puts it best in his introduction: "Masterful old techniques come to life with contemporary relevance...the original spirit of Lanvin has been transposed to the present."

PBIS CALL TO ACTION
□ Consider allowing students to make-up assignments during the winter break – this time would be an excellent opportunity for students to get back on track

□ Please bring in food for the Fashion Cares Food Drive – students are in the lobby collecting every morning.

□ I know we have mentioned it for the last couple of weeks, but please as the holiday season gets closer and closer, this can be a difficult time for our students. Please be sensitive towards their needs and notify guidance counselors, deans and other support staff of any concerns you may have.

□ Important Fashion Dollar announcements to STOP TOKEN HOARDING
(1) USE FD OR LOSE THEM - Fashion Dollars will not carry over from year to year and MUST be spent during this school year
(2) We will soon be installing Interest Rates on Fashion Dollar accounts in the hopes of getting students to deposit them

OPERATIONAL NEED TO KNOW
Correct Protocol for Hanging Up Flyers
The proper protocol is to place them in Ms. Vasconcellos’s mailbox, our Coordinator of Student Activities, and they will then be properly displayed throughout the building.
Do not hang up any flyers around the building on your own no matter how valuable they might be to our students and the HSFI community.

Attendance Bubbling
If you received a yellow notice, then you are missing sheets for November.  If you need them to be reprinted, please come to the attendance office located in Room 201.

COOL THINGS THIS WEEK
HOLIDAY WINDOWS UNVEILING EVENT
All HSFI staff is invited to the unveiling of our Holiday Window Displays this coming Thursday, December 17 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.  The amazing work of our visual merchandising students under the guidance of Ms. Selleck will be on display for all of New York City to enjoy.

SING
The next step in HSFI’s SING journey is the selection of student leaders to run the show and all the different parts of it.  We need your help in making sure we select the most qualified and trustworthy candidates.  Students will be required to submit 2 staff recommendations in order to be considered for a position.  Do not worry as the recommendation is a check box form with a space for additional comments that is totally optional.  Student interviews will be conducted next Monday and Tuesday.
Just a couple of important points regarding these recommendations:
*Students will give you the recommendation form, but DO NOT give it back to them – your recommendation is confidential and the form should be put in Ms. Gerasimovich-Vega’s mailbox or brought to the Principal’s office in Room 819.
*These recommendations are crucial to SING’s success – the production is student run with adult guidance, so the student leaders we choose will make or break the program’s success.
*In addition to your recommendation, students as part of the application (ATTACHED) will be required to answer two questions in writing:
(1) What past experiences make you qualified to be in a Leadership Position of HSFI SING?
(2) What personal attributes would make you a great HSFI SING leader?
Thank you in advance for your help.

SING SAVE THE DATE
The HSFI SING performance dates will be on Friday, April 15 & Saturday, April 16.
