PBIS Soaring Stars

Angela Ianniello, worked through the quagmire of paperwork to get the snacks started @ HSFI. The Chit Chat Club now has snacks 9th and 10th period. Have you heard the good news?

Thanks to increased funding from the Mayor and City Council, every Brooklyn Public Library branch is now open at least six days per week starting today. We’re also adding extra morning and evening hours throughout the borough to make our libraries even more accessible to all of our patrons.

Weekends are about to get a lot livelier at BPL, as 10 more branches open their doors and six additional branches offer Sunday service. All told, we’re adding more than 200 hours to our schedule every week to make sure that your local library is open at a time that works for you.

If you think expanded library service is good for Brooklyn, please help us thank the people who made it possible. Visit click.bklynlibraryinfo.org/?qs=799a30e72ed125679ad0343b20d66e8c0554e76a9610bccb33c30f23160c3455fe44fc6ac9da14b6> to thank your elected officials for their investment in Brooklyn Public Library.

On October 29, 2015 we hosted the Alumni Multicultural Dinner Fundraiser and it was a huge success largely due to the following colleagues who contributed and attended the event. Please, Please highlight them in our schools PBIS Data Report newsletter. Thank you Ms. D

#1 – CHANCELLOR FARINA COLLEGE ACCESS VISIT
We have one more showcase on Monday when Chancellor Farina & Deputy Chancellor Weinberg visit HSFI on Monday to highlight our College Access work that includes our APPS college prep classes, guidance support, Youth Leaders and Bridge Coaches.
Chancellor Farina will also be highlighting a SAT School Day pilot program that HSFI will be participating in this March where all 11th graders will be taking the SAT on a school day in school for free.  We at HSFI are thrilled to be part of this program that will be a reality for all schools starting next year.  There will be newspaper and TV press there at the event and I will let the entire HSFI community know about the coverage as it becomes available to me.

#2 – ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO DEPOSIT FASHION DOLLAR TOKENS
We are out of Fashion Dollar tokens – please encourage your students to deposit their tokens.  This week we will have our first set of students going out to lunch and our first after school celebration which will be an ice cream party.  If you out of tokens, please use FashionSoaars.com for the distribution of Fashion Dollars.

#3 – LUNCH APPLICATIONS – URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!!!
We still have 500+ students who still have not returned their lunch application – you have a list of your students.  Follow up with these students and help motivate them to return these applications.  Always remember that HSFI receives $1 million dollars in Title I funding through the collection of these lunch applications – our school would look a whole lot different without these funds – people’s jobs and student services are at stake.

#4 – VTODs FOR THE WEEK

viscous (adj.) having the sticky properties of an adhesive. A viscous liquid is thick and sticky and does not flow easily.   In Alberta Canada, fierce opponents of oil development call the nation’s petroleum reserve ‘tar sands’ instead of the more reassuring ‘oil sands’ because they say it has the viscous quality of peanut butter.
Wednesday, October 28
aggregate 1 (v). to join or combine into a single group. The web site aggregates content from many other sites. These insects tend to aggregate in dark, moist places. 2. to equal a specified number or amount. All together, they had profits aggregating more than 10 million dollars. 3. (n) a total amount:  They won the two games by an aggregate of 40 points.
Thursday, October 29
inherent 1. (adj.) belonging to the basic nature of someone or something.  I'm afraid the problems you mention are inherent in the system. 2.  Inherently (adv.): A more romantic and less scientific interpretation of Mary Shelley’s   Gothic horror story, Frankenstein, is that human beings are inherently good but corrupted by society.
Friday, October 30
ultimatum (n): a final demand.  Give him an ultimatum: either resign today or be fired tomorrow. In 1914, Austria-Hungary issued a diplomatic ultimatum to Serbia; in the case of Serbia, the rejection brought about a declaration of war upon her.

#6 – GIRLS COUNTRY TEAM SHINES
Congratulations to the girls Cross Country team as they had a great showing at the Marty Lewis Borough Challenge at Van Cortlandt Park last Saturday. #11 – RED RIBBON WEEK THIS WEEK AT HSFI
Red Ribbon Week originated as a tribute to Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" S. Camarena, a narcotics agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration.  In 1985, Mr. Camarena was kidnapped and murdered by drug traffickers in Guadalajara, Mexico. Kiki’s death enraged many Americans in his hometown of Calexico, California, and they began to wear red ribbons to commemorate his sacrifice. The anti-drug message spread quickly, and in 1988, the National Family Partnership took the Red Ribbon Celebration nationwide. The focus of the celebration is to educate individuals, families, and communities on the destructive effects of drugs and the positive life choices available.
Help combat illegal drug use by encouraging our students to pledge to be drug free.  Students can pledge on Thursday, October 29th at the SPARK’s office during their lunch period in room 1011-10th floor or in the lobby 2nd period.  Thank you for supporting and bringing awareness to our Fashion community.  For more information, see Ms. Nunez in room 1011.

#1 – THANK YOU FOR BEING READY FOR OUR HIGH PROFILE VISITS
As always, Manhattan Superintendent Marisol Bradbury and her team were impressed with their visit to HSFI.  These visits are nerve racking, but we always shine because we take these visits seriously as opportunity to show off the incredible work we do for our students.
As you well know, InsideSchools.org will be visiting HSFI on Monday to do a profile on the school.  InsideSchools.org is the main place where parents go to get information on NYC schools.  We always want the best and brightest students and families – a positive review from InsideSchools.org will go a long way to helping our admissions efforts.

#2 – OFFICIAL FALCON HEALTH CENTER OPENING THIS THURSDAY
You are invited this Thursday from 8:30 am – 10:00 am to the official opening of the Falcon Health Center with elected officials and key members of the New York City Department of Education and Department of Health.  The health center has had a hugely positive impact on our students’ lives and there is reason to celebrate!

#3 – CHANGING ANNOUNCEMENT TIME
We will be moving our announcements to the beginning of 3rd period starting on Monday – the final results were 85% / 15% for the change.

#4 – OPENING UP COMPUTER LABS BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL – STAFF NEEDED
We want to open up a computer lab for students before school from 7:30 am – 9:00 am and after school from 2:50 pm – 4:50 pm.  Our students need this opportunity to complete assignments, do research and print assignments.  We need staff to oversee these computer lab hours.  Please apply online to per session posting #54 – please also email me directly to let me know you have applied for the position.

#5 – LUNCH APPLICATIONS – URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!!!
We still have 550 students who still have not returned their lunch application – the lists of your students were placed in your mailboxes last week.  Follow up with these students and help motivate them to return these applications.  Always remember that HSFI receives $1 million dollars in Title I funding through the collection of these lunch applications – our school would look a whole lot different without these funds – people’s jobs and student services are at stake.

#6 – STUDENT AT-RISK FORMS NEED TO BE UTILIZED
Thus far, only 105 students (covering 27 teachers and Assistant Principals) have been identified as at-risk students through our ‘Google Student At Risk Form.’  With 1825 students at HSFI, I suspect there are more than 105 failing grades for the first marking period.  Moving forward, these ‘Student At Risk Forms’ must be filled out for struggling students – all teachers have contractually mandated parent engagement time to fill out these forms.

#7 – NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TUTORING / MENTORING
Speaking of at-risk students, another tool in our arsenal to support our struggling students is tutoring and mentoring from our National Honor Society (NHS) students.  I visited this NHS tutoring centering this past Thursday and I saw about 8 NHS students just sitting waiting for students to help – they had nobody to help – it was such a waste to have them sitting there ready to go with nothing to do.  WE NEED REFERRALS!  I know you have students in your classes that can benefit from this peer tutoring.
The way you refer a student to this tutoring is to submit an academic guidance referral on Jupiter Grades with the message NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY in the message section.  We will then get meet with the student and help get them to the tutoring sessions.

#8 – PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE DATES
Parent Teacher Conference Night is Thursday, November 19 from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Parent Teacher Conference Afternoon is Friday, November 20 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

#9 – HSFI WELCOMES DANIELLE NAGHI, RELATIONSHIP ABUSE PREVENTION PROGRAM
Welcome to our new RAPP (Relationship Abuse Prevention Program) Director Danielle Naghi!  RAPP offers confidential individual and group counseling including, but not limited to: Relationship issues, peer issues, problems at home, stress, anxiety, etc. We also offer classroom workshops to educate students about teen dating violence and healthy relationships. The workshops also aim to prevent violence, bullying, and harassment between students and their peers. Classroom workshops can also be created to meet the needs of your classroom.
To make a referral or request a workshop:
-Stop by Room 803-A and speak with Danielle Naghi, LMSW or email at dnaghi@hsfi.us
OR
-Let students know they are welcome to stop by Room 803-A anytime Tuesday-Thursday in October, and Tuesday-Friday for the rest of the year

#10 – COLLEGE ACCESS SHOWCASE
On Monday, October 26, HSFI will be showcased by the Mayor’s Office and NYC Department of Education for our college access work.  The Mayor or Deputy Mayor, Deputy Chancellor Phil Weinberg and the press will be here to celebrate the great work we do in this area of focus.

#11 – FASHION DOLLARS PRICE LIST
The Fashion Dollars price list is out (see below) and students will be able to start purchasing these rewards this week – please market these privileges and rewards to our students and leverage them to get our student to follow through on the positive behaviors that they need to succeed.

#12 – take care of attendance sheets
Important Reminders about Your Attendance Sheets:
(1) The sheet is only for attendance - nothing else.  Grades, check marks, random marks and random writing are not allowed on these sheets.  White out is not be used on these sheets.
(2) Do not crumble these sheets - they need to be in pristine condition when turned in.

On Monday, October 26, HSFI will be showcased by the Mayor’s Office and NYC Department of Education for our college access work.  The Mayor or Deputy Mayor, Deputy Chancellor Phil Weinberg and the press will be here to celebrate the great work we do in this area of focus.

#8 – NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TUTORING / MENTORING
I am pleased to share with you another tool in our arsenal to support our struggling students – tutoring and mentoring from our National Honor Society students.  Every day we will have our very best students from the National Honor Society available after school both during 9th and 10th periods to tutor and mentor our struggling students in the Charles Nolan Room in the library.  As we know all too well, many times our students listen to their classmates more than they listen to us adults.  WE NEED REFERRALS to get our National Honor Society students working and get our struggling students the help they need.
Thank you to Ms. Adamczyk (madamcz@schools.nyc.gov), the National Honor Society Director, and Assistant Principal Steve Rau (srau@schools.nyc.gov) for their efforts in executing this program.  Please feel free to email either of them if you have any questions.
