– CODING CLASS FOR HSFI STUDENTS
The High School of Fashion
Industries is partnering with the non-profit organization ScriptEd to equip
students with the fundamental coding skills that will ultimately create access
to careers in technology. ScriptEd is a year-long computer programming class
that teaches students the fundamentals of web development including HTML, CSS
and Javascript. Students will also learn
skills used in the technology industry, like how to use a version control
system and how to collaborate with teammates on code. In addition, students
will also go on field trips to technology firms, and participate in hackathons.
Students who demonstrate the most commitment in the class will be eligible for
paid internships at technology companies during the summer break. The class meets twice a week (3:45 pm to 5:15
pm) and is taught by tech industry professionals. Upon completion of the course students will
be awarded a CTE credit.
Please encourage HSFI 10th
and 11th graders to apply – they will find the application on their
HSFI emails. All applicants must be in
good academic standing with at least a 90% attendance rate and be at least 17
years of age. Advise students that space
is limited and there are only 30 available seats for this course.
#3 – MAJOR CAPITAL FUNDING AWARD
After meeting with a number of NYC government officials last year,
I am thrilled to announce that the Office of the Manhattan Borough President
has awarded HSFI $500,000 in Capital Funds for the installation of central air
in our public spaces such as the cafeteria, gymnasium and/or auditorium. I will be meeting with the NYC School
Construction Authority in the near future to see how far half a million dollars
will get take us in this installation(s).
I will continue to lobby our elected officials to get HSFI the funds we
deserve to serve our students.

– VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Monday, September 28
elliptical 1. Adj. egg-shaped; oval; The
moon follows an elliptical path around the Earth. Graphically speaking, you
must know two types of ellipses: horizontal and vertical. 2. describes an economy of language;
suggesting what you mean rather than saying or writing it clearly. The writing
in the short story was so elliptical, I read it a few times to better understand
it.
Tuesday, September 29
carcinogen (n): a substance or agent
causing cancer. Carcinogens cause damage to our DNA, or cause cells to divide
faster than their normal rate, thus causing cancer; asbestos, DDT, and tobacco
smoke are examples of them.
Wednesday, September 30
retrospective 1. (n) exhibition of an artist’s
life work. The Museum of Modern Art presented,” a retrospective of the
multifaceted work of composer, musician, and singer Bjork ." 2. (adj.)
based on memory; Scout Finch, the narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, presents
“both the point of view of a wicked smart almost six year old” and the
“retrospective” wisdom of an
adult.”
Thursday, October 1
epic 1. (n) a long narrative poem telling of a hero’s
deeds. Homer wrote the ancient Greek
epic The Odyssey, tracing the challenges faced by its hero, Odysseus. 2. (adj.) impressive; surpassing the ordinary
especially in size and scale. Hurricane Sandy, an epic storm, wreaked havoc on
the East Coast.
Friday, October 2
embargo (n): a government order that
limits trade in some way. Secretary of
State Kerry presided over the opening of the American Embassy in Cuba, and
American tourists and businesses are finding restrictions eased despite USA’s
continuing trade embargo of the island nation.
#5 – LACTATION ROOM
Room 1009 (on the east side of the 10th floor) has been designated as the school Lactation Room for staff who need it. There is a sign of the front of the door identifying the space and the room can be opened with a master key. Staff who uses the room should place a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign (located inside of the room) on the outside of the door so the appropriate privacy can be maintained.
