#2 – CODING CLASS FOR HSFI STUDENTS
The High School of Fashion Industries is partnering with the non-profit organization ScriptEd to equip students with the fundamental coding skills that will ultimately create access to careers in technology. ScriptEd is a year-long computer programming class that teaches students the fundamentals of web development including HTML, CSS and Javascript.  Students will also learn skills used in the technology industry, like how to use a version control system and how to collaborate with teammates on code. In addition, students will also go on field trips to technology firms, and participate in hackathons. Students who demonstrate the most commitment in the class will be eligible for paid internships at technology companies during the summer break.  The class meets twice a week (3:45 pm to 5:15 pm) and is taught by tech industry professionals.  Upon completion of the course students will be awarded a CTE credit.
Please encourage HSFI 10th and 11th graders to apply – they will find the application on their HSFI emails.  All applicants must be in good academic standing with at least a 90% attendance rate and be at least 17 years of age.  Advise students that space is limited and there are only 30 available seats for this course.

#3 – MAJOR CAPITAL FUNDING AWARD
After meeting with a number of NYC government officials last year, I am thrilled to announce that the Office of the Manhattan Borough President has awarded HSFI $500,000 in Capital Funds for the installation of central air in our public spaces such as the cafeteria, gymnasium and/or auditorium.  I will be meeting with the NYC School Construction Authority in the near future to see how far half a million dollars will get take us in this installation(s).  I will continue to lobby our elected officials to get HSFI the funds we deserve to serve our students.

Library News

September is Library Card Sign-up Month @ HSFI and NYC Libraries

Library card sign-up month is a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind the masses that a library card is the key to limitless opportunities.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. It is a time when the ALA and libraries across the country join together to remind parents and children that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

This year's Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-up Month is Snoopy, the world-famous beagle from Peanuts.

The City is launching its 2015 Flu Vaccination Campaign to ensure that City employees again have easy access to a flu shot. The campaign will run through the month of December.
This is one of many wellness initiatives that the Mayor and the Office of Labor Relations have committed to in an effort to improve the health of the New York City workforce. The flu is most common during the fall and winter months. Every year, more than 2,000 New Yorkers die of seasonal influenza and pneumonia, which can develop as a complication of flu. A flu shot is the BEST way to protect against seasonal influenza.
Starting on Wednesday, September 16th, this campaign will allow all City employees who receive health insurance through the City to get a free annual flu vaccination:
  • At your worksite – schedule your appointment by clicking here, or call 1-866-481-4391 Mon-Fri from 8AM-6PM.

  • At an AdvantageCare Physicians Location – schedule your appointment online by clicking here, or call the exclusive Gold Service Line for City of New York employees at 1-646-680-3000                            Mon-Fri from 8AM-5PM.
  • At a participating pharmacy – to find a list of DOHMH approved pharmacies please click here.
Wherever you go to get the shot, be sure to bring your agency ID and your health plan card.
Now is the time to protect yourself before the height of the flu season.
Got your flu shot? Tweet about it to spread the word and encourage others! #GotMyFluShot
