SCHOOL CALENDAR:
UPCOMING EVENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL TO ACTION
Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.
HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS
LOOK OUT FOR TRAUMA IN OUR STUDENTS AS THE TERM WINDS DOWN
While many of our students have thrived in the return to school, we know there are many students who are struggling. Students are worried about failing classes, going to summer school and taking standardized Regents tests for the first time in years. Please look for changes in your students and let one of our mental health professionals know if you see a child in distress.
HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE
WE ARE IN THE THIRD & FINAL MARKING PERIOD OF THE SPRING TERM
We are in the third and final marking period of the Spring term - please make sure students know where they stand in their classes and know what is required for them to receive the grades that they would like to receive. This marking period is especially critical for at-risk students because summer school and promotion decisions are based on these grades.

NEW ITEMS:
BIG WEEK FOR OUR CTE DEPARTMENT
This Friday, April 29, our Graphics & Illustration and Visual Merchandising majors will have an external review that will determine our State recertification. Our ability to be state certified is a big deal - it impacts our budget and ability to collect portfolios from incoming students. Thank you CTE for all your efforts!
FASHION SHOWS - SAVE THE DATES
Below are the Save The Dates for our Fashion Shows - our Public Show is on May 18 and the Industry Show is on May 24. We would love you to attend both shows, but we would like all staff to attend the Industry Show where HSFI Staff will be honored for supporting our students in such exemplary ways over the past couple of years.
ACADEMIC CTE ACCREDITATION COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES
We have held two Academic CTE Committee meetings examining our Grading Policy. Here are the notes from the two meetings.
Monday, March 21 (Period 4) Notes
Staff in Attendance
K. Boulamaali; N. Chan; J. Egan; C. Gerasimovich; V. Heney; S. Kohm; A. Looser; T. Lucyshyn; E. McGoldrick; N. Moore; J. Musarra; L. Newport; S. Rau; T. Ricci; K. Santos; E. Sostre-King; D. Stampone; M. Vasquez; D. Blank
Comments
□ Need to hold individual meetings with students to work on revisions and build relationships with students
□ Hard time grading between a 3 and 4 / rather have a 1-5 scale
□ Students like the ability to make revisions - revisions need to be a separate / similar assignment
□ Students still focused on numbers, not skills
□ 0-4 grading scale works
□ Under DOE guidelines, we cannot grade for attendance
□ Main issue is students taking advantage of grading system versus students who legitimately have hardships - still many students with extenuating circumstances
□ CTE - meeting deadlines is an industry standard - students need practice doing this
□ Revisions are where the major learning is happening
□ Flexibility is creating more anxiety for students
□ Issue for special education students getting services based on grades
□ Some students wait until the end to hand in assignments and then able to do a revision
□ Grading policy not working for Physical Education / students not attending consistently but still passing
□ 22 on an assignment yet still goes in as a 50 - think going to pass Regents
□ On Regents - students can get a raw score of 30 and can still pass the Regents
□ Departments can decide standards - make clear what the expectations are and what looking for
□ Statistically we have not seen a dramatic increase in passing grades
□ Student created rubrics are very helpful
□ Assignments can be worth more as the term goes on - technical issue on Jupiter / now that students are better at a skill
□ Can set reasonable windows of time for submissions - can get a student to look at assignment before eligible for a revision
Plan for Next Meeting
Read Chapter 13 of Grading For Equity book entitled ‘Practices That Build Soft Skills Without Including Them in the Grade’
Wednesday, April 13 (Period 4) Notes
Staff in Attendance
K. Boulamaali; N. Chan; C. Gerasimovich; J. Klepacki; S. Kohm; A. Looser; E. McGoldrick; L. Newport; B. Russell; K. Santos; O. Smith; E. Sostre-King; D. Stampone; D. Blank
Comments
□ Student to Student accountability - developing what it means to be a good student
□ Group assignments promote accountability
□ Student Accountability rubrics that include Coming to Class on time / Maximize use of instructional time
□ Fall into the trap of saying “what would happen in the real world” - Grading For Equity book has some good examples of this “real world” not being so real
□ Yet does not mean that student behaviors are not annoying teachers and creating more work for others
□ More practical ways through positive reinforcement to get students invested
□ Grading soft skills is another heavy lift for teachers - focus should be on student peer evaluation and self-regulation
□ Put these soft skills in Jupiter - not graded but they see it and has an impact on them
□ Students need to understand the Why / Reasoning
□ Physical Education issues with the minimum grade of 50 still persist
□ Need for a grade between 85 and 100 especially when it comes to grading writing
□ Students’ focus is still on numbers, not skills
□ ‘Missing’ Grade & ‘Zero’ Grade are not the same thing
Plan for Next Meeting
Bring students to the next meeting to get their perspective
