THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices with one another.  Each week will focus on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.

Here are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of intervisitations; all are focused on different methods of students scaffolding information.

In Mr. Egan's Global one class, he created a detailed handout that gets more challenging with each step. Students begin by identifying information and move to higher DOK levels as they move forward.
In her English 1 class, Ms. Bailey scaffolded a scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in order to help students who are new to Shakespeare get more comfortable with the language

In the Algebra classes, Ms. Paz, Ms. Chan, and Mr. Kilpatrick created a statistics project in order to help students better understand statistical measures by acting as statisticians themselves.

In Ms. David’s Fashion Design and Construction class, the students used Cornell note templates to create and conduct an oral presentation that detailed the process of coming up with a design for a pair of elastic waist shorts. The students created complex and detailed PPTs with an oral presentation that showed their inspiration.

To see these activities and more join the HSFI Google+ Page found here:

*If any staff member would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice, send it to Ms. Paz at SPaz@schools.nyc.gov or Mr. Kearns at kkearns@schools.nyc.go

PBIS CALL TO ACTION

5 DAYS LEFT UNTIL BREAK / WHEN WE RETURN 3 FULL WEEKS
We are in the homestretch of the Fall term.  Consider allowing students to make-up assignments during the winter break – this time would be an excellent opportunity for students to get back on track.

FOLLOW UP TO REPORT CARD CONFERENCING FOR 9TH GRADERS
Within days we will be getting 9th grade teachers the ‘Recovery Contracts’ that our 9th graders filled out at our ‘Report Card Conferencing’ from this past Thursday.  On these contracts, students identified areas they needed help in to succeed and areas they needed to improve upon themselves.  Take some time to review these contracts with those individual students.
To honor the student’s thoughtfulness about next steps in their classes, we will be asking teachers to do the following:
#1
Review the goal the student has written for accuracy – is the suggested behavior change a priority for the student or is there something else that would be more effective?
#2a
If the goal is accurate, verbally acknowledge receipt of the goal.  “I see you are prepared to succeed by (arriving on time every day, completing all classwork).”
#2b
If the goal is not fully accurate, meet with the student to add further suggestions on the back of the goal.
#3
Reiterate to the student how you will support their efforts

THIS WEEK IS SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEK
School Spirit Week will be this week – considering joining in the festivities.
Monday -- Disney/Superhero
Tuesday - Twin Day
Wednesday -- Wear Pink
Thursday - Jersey/ Sports
Friday - Grade Day.
The students love it when staff participates, so please support the week. Also, as part of Spirit Week there will be a Showcase performance on Thursday, December 22 after school in the auditorium where the Stunts team, the 3 Dance teams, SING and Fashion with a Purpose will be presenting their skills for the students.

HOLIDAY SEASON CHALLENGING FOR STUDENTS
As we all know, the holiday season is upon us, and often times our students may be dealing with some sensitive issues during this time. If you should notice any behavior changes with any of your students, please let the counselors know either through a guidance referral (less serious matters) or speak directly to them (more serious matters).

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.
LEXICAL ARRAY: LOUD from SONOROUS to OBSTREPEROUS
Monday, December 5
Sonorous: (adj.) (so’·norous) describing full, rich, deep sound.  “The high pitch of the trumpet contrasted well with the sonorous sound of the tuba.”  “The singer’s sonorous baritone has been among the most reliably impressive voices in the New York Theater.”
Tuesday, December 6
Cacophonous: (adj.) (ca·coph’·o·nous) harsh and loud sounding; discordant.  Even the finest orchestra makes a cacophonous racket when they're tuning their instruments in unison.
Wednesday, December 7
Fortissimo: (adj. Italian)   very loud, a musical term.   When the pianist wants to make a point, often, he plays with a heavy hand — fortissimo, when “mezzo forte” or moderately loud would have suited.
Thursday, December 8
Resounding: (adj.) filled with sound that echoes or reverberates. The resounding laughter of children filled the schoolyard at lunch time.  2, impressively thorough or complete. The play was a resounding success on Broadway.
Friday, December 9
Boisterous: (adj.) very noisy and active in a lively way. My little brother and his boisterous friends happily took over the living room for their fun and games.

DATA TEAM REPORT
The PBIS Data team (Mr. Raschilla, Ms. Weiss, Mr. Rau, and Mr. Blank) meets weekly to analyze the disciplinary trends impacting the High School of Fashion Industries community.  We will make you aware of what has happened at the school each week and have a call for action to guide our responses to eliminate this negative behavior and promote positive behavior.

KEY REGULATIONS FROM THE NYC DOE
Conflicts of Interest Laws
All NYCDOE employees are required to comply with the City's Conflicts of Interest Laws and with Chancellor's Regulation C-110. You will receive the annual email regarding holiday gifts and conflicts of interest from mynyc@nyc.gov in the next couple of weeks. Please note the following highlights for rules on giving and receiving gifts that are covered in the email:
Gifts:
(1) Employees may not accept gifts or tips for doing their jobs.
(2) Supervisors may not accept holiday gifts from their subordinates, except gifts of negligible monetary value, i.e., under $10. Supervisors may give holiday gifts to their subordinates, as long as the gift is not unusually extravagant.
(3) Employees may not accept offers of free attendance at holiday parties or events  sponsored by outside entities, such as those doing business with the city, unless they are given permission to do so in writing by their agency head that their attendance would further a  legitimate city purpose related to their job. Employees do not need permission to attend if they pay for the ticket

Guidance on Holiday Displays
Please be aware of and sensitive to the significance of seasonal observances and religious holidays as you work to foster mutual understanding and respect for your community’s diverse religious, racial, ethnic, and cultural heritages. Public schools may not endorse or promote a particular religion or belief system. Please share these guidelines regarding the display of cultural and holiday symbols with your staff:
(1) The primary purpose of any displays should be to promote understanding and respect for the rights of all individuals regarding their beliefs, values, and customs.
(2) The display of holiday symbol decorations with secular dimensions is permitted. Permitted symbols include, but are not limited to, Christmas trees, kinaras, dreidels, menorahs, and the Star and Crescent. Displays that depict images of deities, other religious figures, or religious texts are prohibited.
(3) Holiday displays must not appear to promote or celebrate any single religion or holiday. Therefore, any permitted symbol or decoration must be displayed simultaneously with other symbols or decorations reflecting different beliefs or customs.
(4) All holiday displays should be temporary in nature.
For issues concerning religious observance by students, please refer to Chancellor’s Regulation A-630.
