PBIS CALL TO ACTION

● We are one week away from the beginning of our Lateness plan (see below for details) – please read the letter to students as much as you can over the next week

● Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week - reach out to parents you need to see so they can adjust their schedules including child care, in order to attend the conferences

● The Spring Club Fair is this coming Friday, March 4 during the lunch periods in Room 829 – encourage your students to attend and get involved – their participation is great for having them feel connected to the school and helps them with their college applications

● Referral Guidelines – remember the protocol for letting HSFI staff know about at-risk students:
#1 - At-Risk Referral form
#2 - If the issues persist within a given marking period, fill out a Guidance Referral
#3 - Start fresh at the beginning of the 2nd Marking Period – go back to the At-Risk Referral form
PLEASE REMEMBER THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TUTORING REFERRALS

LATENESS PLAN READY TO ROLLOUT
We are about to start our ‘Lateness Plan’ the week of March 7.  In your mailboxes you should have received a letter from me addressed to our students that I would like you to read every day this week (2/29 – 3/4).  I do not want any HSFI student saying they did not hear about this plan.  HSFI parents have received their letter about the plan.  I’m hopeful that this plan will make a positive impact on this issue.  Thank you!

Dear HSFI Students,
As you all know, the main goal of the High School of Fashion Industries is to prepare you for life after HSFI. One of the main problems in our school is that there are over 600 students arriving late every day.  We know that ‘NYC Happens’ and students will occasionally come late due to mass transit issues.  Unfortunately, we have a large number of students that consistently come late.  This lateness results in these students missing important instructional time that can result in low grades, failing grades and/or poor exam results.  If this lateness continues later in life, you will be fired from your job.  Your job right now is to be a student and that means coming to school on time.  We are going to be instituting a plan that will hopefully result in more students coming on time to their classes.

Here are the key parts of this lateness plan:
● Late students will sit in the auditorium for the duration of the class period that they are late to under the supervision of a HSFI staff member
● Guidance counselors will be providing immediate phone notification to all parents / guardians of the students held in the auditorium that are consistently late
● This plan will take place randomly on 1-2 school days during a given school week
● This plan will take place during periods 1 and 2 only
● For Period 1 – students will be held in the auditorium if they arrive to school after 8:15 am
(8:10 am is the beginning of Period 1 – students will be given these 5 extra minutes to get to class)
● For Period 2 – students will be held in the auditorium if they arrive to school after 9:09 am
(9:04 am is the beginning of Period 2 – students will be given these 5 extra minutes to get to class)
● Official student attendance will be adjusted to reflect a student’s time of arrival
● Students can submit ‘MTA Late Slips’ to be excused from this consequence if it applies
● Students on time will be given 5 Fashion Dollars for being on time each school day
● This plan will take effect the week of March 7, 2016

We hope that you understand the importance of being on time.  This lateness plan has been shared and approved by the School Leadership Team that consists of HSFI parents, staff, students and supervisors.

2016-17 Planning
I am following up on my presentation to begin the Spring term when I identified the areas of growth for the High School of Fashion Industries and the need to begin planning for the 2016-17 school year so that we are unified as a school.  The preparation is well under way with our Technology Vision team and 13 staff members signed up for the 'Writing Revolution' PD that will take place in March.
Below is a Google survey for you to sign up for the planning teams for the remaining topics (only if you wish to):
(1) Development of the Social-Emotional Skills of HSFI Students - this includes Professionalism / Growth Mindset and possibly the creation of a Service Learning requirement
(2) ICT Teacher Team development - establishing best practices and resources for these teacher teams

STAFF MEMBERS WHO SOARR

Thank you to MS. BROADBELT & MS. IANNIELLO for organizing some best wishes for a staff member who is currently not able to make it into work.

Thank you to MS. CHRISTINA VEGA for her amazing efforts as our SING coordinator – we have over 100+ students involved in the production and the show is a month and a half away – she has impressively built this from scratch!

Thank you to MR. EGAN for his work as testing coordinator in preparing for the special administration of the Algebra Regents that took place last week for 40 students looking to either pass the exam or achieve four-year CUNY proficiency.

Thank you to MR. RAU & MS. SAN JORGE for doing an incredible job in taking over the Coordinator of Student Activities (COSA) position that has produced a seamless transition.

Thank you to MS. McKEON & MS. MELENCIANO for helping prepare for the PSAT and SAT administration that will be taking place this week.

Thank you to MS. WEISS, MS. PADRON & MS. MELENCIANO for being there every Fashion Dollar Friday at 7:45 am to collect FD tokens from our students.  They take their roles seriously as they now check the attendance and cutting reports of the students who win the FDF Raffle to insure that deserving students win the weekly prizes.

Thank you to MS. DAMIAN, MS. PAGLIARO & MS. VACCARO for attending an all-day professional development on sustainability.

Thank you to MS. SELLECK for attending training at the Fashion Institute of Technology that will be hugely beneficial to our students who want to one day attend this university.

Thank you to MS. VACCARO for organizing the ordering of the new AMAZING ‘FLY’ merchandise in the school store that will continue to motivate our students to earn Fashion Dollars.

Thank you to MS. KING, MS. SCHWENNER & MS. RIVIERE for opening up their classrooms to allow for NOCTI practice classes.  NOCTI is the Career & Technical Education equivalent of the Regents.

VTODs FOR THE WEEK

Correlation (n) the relationship between things that happen or change together. There is a direct correlation between the best-known brands and the best-selling brands. A significant correlation exists between going to high school and being a teenager, but that doesn't mean that going to high school causes you to be a teenager.
Tuesday March 1
PSAT - SAT
Wednesday, March 2
Eminent (adj.) honored, praiseworthy, accomplished, highly respected.  After consulting two eminent surgeons in the field, the parents felt more confident about their child’s surgery. He communicated with some of the most eminent scholars of his time on mathematical subjects.
Thursday, March 3
Imminent (adj.) likely to happen very soon; probable.  Many species of animal are in imminent danger of extinction.  The mayor said, “The following information about an imminent hurricane should be heeded by everyone.”
Friday, March 4
Epigram (n) a short and clever saying or poem.  A famous epigram of Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde is "I can resist everything but temptation." In one of her epigrams, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt suggested, “It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness."

Student Government is proud to present Spirit Wednesdays!
These 'Spirit Wednesdays' are designed to energize the HSFI community and allow all of us to show off how proud we are as HSFI students.
You will be voting on the 'Spirit Day' themes - every student should vote for 5 spirit days that you feel that we should put into action.

We are in third place for the GetSchooled Challenge – we are SO CLOSE to winning the national competition and get the celebrity visit. We are losing because students are not all logging onto GetSchooled.com, setting up an account and doing the college activities. Our seniors are holding up their end by doing their financial aid forms! Encourage students to log on. Let’s go Fashion!
