FUTURE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING PLANS
Thank you for being open to our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) efforts at HSFI.  Thank you to Ms. Conaghan, Ms. Padron, Ms. Parisse & Ms. Stambouly for leading HSFI’s SEL efforts!
As we move into the Spring term, I wanted to give everyone a summary of where we stand with our efforts and our hopeful plans moving forward:
□ Next Tuesday, January 31 (First Day of Spring term) – During OP, HSFI students will be given time to fill out a Google survey on what emotions they feel at HSFI – this will be the baseline data for the creation of a ‘HSFI Student Charter of Feelings”
□ February 2017 - ‘HSFI Staff Charter of Feelings’ formally established with a charter opening event for all staff where we all are asked to sign the charter signifying that ‘emotions matter’ at the High School of Fashion Industries (Date TBD)
□ February 2017 - Social-Emotional Learning techniques including, but not limited to the ‘Mood Meter,’ used during HSFI staff meetings including focus groups, department meetings, professional learning communities, committee meetings to get us familiar with these strategies
□ February 2017 – HSFI students taught Social-Emotional Learning lessons #3 and #4 in their CTE classes – THANK YOU CTE DEPARTMENT!
□ March 2017 – HSFI staff begins to use Social-Emotional Learning strategies in the classroom during lessons
□ March 2017 – We engage with HSFI students on creating their own ‘Charter of Feelings’ signifying that ‘emotions matter’ at the High School of Fashion Industries
ACTION REQUIRED!
We bought licenses for the MOOD METER APP for every HSFI staff member and student – please fill out this Google survey to help us get you the information you need to get the APP for your personal device:

PBIS CALL TO ACTION

KEEP THE WELCOMING SPIRIT ALIVE
Get those WELCOME POSTERS OUT – start the Spring term off by welcoming your students into your classrooms

TRY TO LEARN YOUR STUDENTS’ NAMES
There is nothing better for a student than to know their teacher knows their name.

GIVE OUT THOSE FASHION DOLLARS
Use the tokens or FashionSoarrs.com to let those Fashion Dollars FLY!!!  These Fashion Dollars will help students start on the positive path in your classes.

MAKE SURE YOU REFER STUDENTS
We cannot help students out, if we do not know if they are having problems – fill out referrals as necessary including academic ones which will refer to the National Honor Society homework help.

RESPECT YOUR COLLEAGUES & THEIR DISCIPLINES
Do not keep students from other classes to finish a test or project without checking with that teacher.
Do not plan a trip taking students out of class, especially last minute, without permission.
Make sure you have a global view of the school and understand that you and your class / subject in one piece of a bigger picture.

HELP NEEDED

STAFF NEEDED FOR MEASURES OF STUDENT LEARNING COMMITTEE
We have been directed by the NYC Department of Education to select a School MOSL (Measures of Student Learning) Selection Committee as soon as possible.  The School Selection window for MOSL decisions will be from February 1st through February 17th.  Here are the parameters of the MOSL Committee:
(1) There are 8 members on this committee.
(2) The principal will select 4 members (either teachers or administrators) and the UFT chapter leader will select the other 4 members
(3) All members must be from the school.
(4) The principal and chapter leader may be members of the committee.
See Ms. Perez in Room 329 if you are interested in joining this committee.

STAFF NEEDED FOR PER SESSION TO COVER THE COMPUTER LAB
If anyone is interested in working per session to cover the Computer Lab (Room 201), please fill out the Google form. You would need to commit to the entire semester and be available for either the early or late coverage.  When selecting days and session, please keep in mind you MUST stay for the entire time.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL REMINDERS
THE WRITING REVOLUTION
9th and 10th grade ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies teachers: No submission of work required for now. We will begin again once target student programs are finalized for the spring. Thank you for your participation!

HOMEWORK POLICY IN EFFECT FOR SPRING TERM
We are all set with our HW policy to begin the Spring 2017 term.  The current draft was sent to you via email.  In addition to your feedback, the policy has been developed and approved by our Academic & Career and Technical Education committee, Student Government, the Parents’ Association & the School Leadership Team.  The policy will be emailed to all students and families – we will make sure students get a copy of the policy before the Spring term begins.  Make sure your HW policies align to the school-wide policy for the Spring term.  We will continually reflect on the policy and make changes as necessary.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATES
SMART BOARD SOFTWARE TO INSTALL AT HOME
You received an email from Mr. Tallone about installing Smart Board software on your home devices - on the staff homepage are the instructions to installing smart note software on your home computer. Please follow the instructions and let Mr. Tallone know if you have any problems.  Do not under any circumstances download the file at school.   It will slow down the network and cause school wide problems.
GOOGLE APP WITH HOW TO VIDEOS
Below is a link to a new google app. It is used like an extension in chrome and has tons of videos on how to use many google programs. Use the link and add it to your hsfi account. (you must be logged into hsfi to use it.) You can even download it at home.    All of HSFI current Tech guides are on connected to the app.
If you have questions, please speak to your supervisor.

AIR CONDITIONER CAMPAIGN MOMENTUM
Thank you to all the HSFI Alumni that have contributed to our Air Conditioning campaign!  Please continue to encourage your students to take ownership of the Air Conditioner campaign – please explain that if every students’ family donated $12 to the campaign we would hit our target to get the matching funds to have air conditioners throughout the building.
SPREAD THE WORD! Every little bit helps! No amount is too small!

W-2 FORMS AVAILABILITY
W-2 FORMS will be delivered on January 31 along with the Teacher's Payroll.  Please pick up your W-2 in the Payroll Office.

ARE THE CLOCKS WORKING IN YOUR ROOM?
Please take a minute and fill out the form.   We are meeting with the contractors who worked on the new PA system and need to know if any of the new clocks are not working

NEW ELEVATOR CARDS
Pick up your new elevator cards from Ms. Ianniello in Room 819.  Students will be picking up their new elevator cards as well – make sure students present their elevator cards.  Here are the rules they (and their parents) agreed to as part of their contracts:
□ You must show respectful behavior to all other HSFI community members in the elevator
□ You, alone, can use the pass – you are not allowed to bring a friend(s) with you onto the elevator
□ When you get on the elevator (which will be color-coded), you need to show your pass to any staff member in the elevator
□ If you lose your elevator pass, the first replacement is free – after that you have to pay for a replacement which will be $10
□ You must return your pass at the end of the school year or when it expires (if it is a temporary pass)
□ You must submit a medical letter from your doctor at the beginning of every school year
The consequences of breaking these rules will be the following:
□ You will lose your elevator pass privileges
□ For seniors, your cap and gown for graduation will be held until it is returned

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.
LEXICAL ARRAY: from TALK: from MUTTER to BELLOW
Tuesday, January 31
Mutter: (v) 1. talk indistinctly; to speak quietly. When a woman came out to take the soup we offered, she muttered, “Thanks.” 2. To complain under one’s breath: “He’s such an unpleasant man,” Emily muttered.
Wednesday, February 1
Utter: (v) to express in words.  “My recommendation to him is that he learn to say ten good things before he utters a criticism.” Please don’t utter a word about that to anyone!
Thursday, February 2
Articulate: (v) to state clearly and effectively.  The community representative articulated his neighbors’ concerns about the flood’s effects. (adj.) fluent, effective, clear: Actively listening to classmates can help students become more articulate in expressing their own ideas.
Friday, February 3
Voice: (v) to express; verbalize (especially voicing your opinions or feelings). The senator voiced concern about how immigrants were treated in some states. With outside shareholders voicing displeasure, that premium looks to be in danger.

DATA TEAM REPORT
The PBIS Data team (Mr. Raschilla, Ms. Weiss, Mr. Rau, and Mr. Blank) meets weekly to analyze the disciplinary trends impacting the High School of Fashion Industries community.  We will make you aware of what has happened at the school each week and have a call for action to guide our responses to eliminate this negative behavior and promote positive behavior.

Below are the registered concerns submitted by staff members through Staff Referral Form:
