WEEKLY BULLETIN for Week Beginning 11.27.17

CALL TO ACTION

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) EXPECTATION - HSFI GOAL OF ‘EVERY STUDENT FEELING CARED FOR
It is my expectation that every adult in the building does a Social Emotional Learning check-in with students when they interact with a student(s) – this should take place in a classroom or office - this is time well invested to let your students know you are looking out for them.

FASHION DOLLARS EXPECTATION - HSFI GOAL OF ‘EVERY STUDENT FEELING CARED FOR
It is my expectation that every adult in the building gives Fashion Dollars to students to positively reinforce the behaviors they want replicated – Fashion Dollars are an easy way to show you care - students like the rewards we have to offer and want Fashion Dollars - there are many students who still have no Fashion Dollars in their accounts. Please support the PBIS program and give out Fashion Dollars on a daily basis.

IMPORTANT HOLIDAY REMINDERS – STRESSFUL TIME FOR STUDENTS
(1) Many of our students do their holiday shopping at our FLY school store – make sure you are giving out Fashion Dollars every class, every day
(2) The holidays are a sensitive time for many people, young and old, if you see a dramatic change in mood or behavior, fill out a Guidance referral
(3) Let a counselor or supervisor know if you see a student without a warm coat as they enter or leave the building
(4) Secure your personal and DOE valuables in your classrooms and offices

HELP US COLLECT LUNCH APPLICATIONS
We still have approximately 300 students who have not returned their lunch applications – the school needs your help in following up with these students to get these applications returned.  The deadline is when we leave for Winter Break.  Teachers – you recently received a print out of your students who have not returned their lunch applications – please follow up with these students on a daily basis to remind them about the importance of these documents.  HSFI would look a lot different without the funding that goes along with the return of these lunch applications – this would affect staffing and services – please treat this collection as seriously as it is.

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Here are some highlights of the best practices shared by HSFI Staff Members.  This round focuses on differentiation/scaffolding strategies in the classroom:

In the English Department.  Ms. Heney created a scaffolded vocabulary guide.  This handout will support students as they work towards using more complex language in their essay writing.

In the Math Department, Ms. Husted created a slope-intercept form foldable activity to use when graphing linear functions. Students worked in partners to graph two different linear functions and discussed what happened to their graphs and tables when the slope and y-intercept were changed. At the end of class students completed a graphic organizer as an exit ticket after group work/discussions.

If you would like to see all of the activities compiled from last year, as well as the weekly additions, you can check out the shared Google Folder via the link below.

*If any staff member would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice, send it to Ms. Paz at spaz@hsfi.us or Mr. Kearns at kkearns@hsfi.us

HSFI STAFF TO VISIT FORT HAMILTON HS THIS WEEK
Staff members from HSFI will be visiting Fort Hamilton HS this Wednesday as part of the Learning Partners Program – we will be reporting back about what is going with our partner school and the best practices they shared with us.

HELP OUR SENIORS WITH THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS
Teacher recommendation letters are an important part of the application. Thank you if you are one of the many teachers engaged in the time-consuming process of writing a great letter. Please try to upload the letters to Naviance before Thanksgiving.
Here's a reminder of the steps to uploading to Naviance:

SPECIAL EDUCATION INFORMATION
We in room 329 wanted to provide everyone with a reminder regarding students with IEPs and SESIS as well as the sections of the IEP which you may find most helpful when planning your instruction. While reviewing the IEP you may notice your Teacher Form responses or information you shared during the meeting- this is a great example of how your insight helps us to create an authentic, student specific IEP. In addition to asking a special educator, you can easily determine which students in your class have IEP's by reviewing your class roster. If the first or last character of the students’ official is a letter, the student has an IEP. Generally, but not in all cases, a letter at the end means the student receives SETSS services, while an I, C, or T at the beginning will signify an ICT placement. There are exceptions where students have been moved from one placement to another based on their needs and this is why it is incredibly important to reference the IEP. Students within our D75 Inclusion Program will have an L as the first letter of their official class and at this time will not appear when you log-in to SESIS. We are working to gain access for those who need it. In the interim you are invited to stop by 329 to speak with Ms. Smith-Brown and review a hard copy of their IEP(s). This year we will continue to distribute an electronic standards-based Teachers Form. The information you are required to complete on this form is subject specific and your insight will better help us in determine the needs of our students with IEPs. The Teacher Form in conjunction with your participation at the IEP meeting (if you are invited) are two critical elements we need in order to best serve our students. We try to plan our IEP and Triennial meetings with teacher schedules in mind, however there are times when families are only available at specific times and a coverage will be requested for your class. Our monthly SIT meeting addresses concerns surrounding Special Education (placement, initials, etc.) and is announced in advance in the Weekly Notes. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and if you are interested in becoming a regular member just let me know. Please feel free to stop by room 329 if you have any questions and thank you for your continued support of our students

TEACHERS’ CHOICE FUNDS
These funds will be included in the November 30 paycheck.  Instructional purchases made between August 1, 2017 - January 14, 2018 are eligible.  Purchases are tax exempt.  Consider contributing a portion of your allocation to the HSFI Copy Center for the purchase of paper/toner.  Include this amount on your Accountability Form.
(To give to the Copy Center, submit a personal check or money order payable to HS of Fashion Industries.  Enter "Copy Center" on the memo line.)

ATTENDANCE SHEETS ARE LEGAL DOCUMENTS
There continue to be issues with staff filling out attendance sheets – absent students are being marked present which could put the school in legal jeopardy.  Make sure your attendance sheets are accurate.
□ There were 743 Confirmation Sheets printed.  They must be returned by Wednesday November 29.
□ Please do not remove students from your Jupiter Grades until they come off the Attendance Sheets.
□ Please return any attendance sheets you are holding onto ASAP.  This delays the Attendance Office and Guidance Staff from doing outreach

GRAPHICS & ILLUSTRATION TESTING ADMINISTRATION
Senior graphics and illustration students will begin testing for their Adobe certification exam this week.  This test will be administered 4th or 7th periods once a week until students pass the test. The test is 50 minutes long and will run into the first ten minutes of 5th or 8th period. Students will be provided with a late pass to 5th or 8th period if taking the exam. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we administer this exam. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Katy Collins at ext. 8443.

PROTOCOLS FOR RESPONDING TO CLASSROOM INCIDENTS
In the event of an incident in your classroom that creates disruption (student is defiant and / or uncooperative) but is NOT A THREAT to student and/or staff safety, the following protocol should be followed:
□ Classroom management, i.e., using your skills as an educator to move on from the situation, followed by
□ A phone call to your Supervisor informing them of the incident and the steps you have taken to address the matter, followed by
□ A referral to the Peace Center and/or the Guidance Department via Google Docs., followed by
□ Outreach to parents, informing them of their child’s misbehavior, and request for family support to correct the matter.

In the event of an incident in your classroom that involves an immediate THREAT to student and/or staff safety, the following protocol should be followed:
□ A phone call to the Peace Center (x1491 or x1431) informing available staff of the incident and requesting assistance, followed by
□ A phone call to School Safety (x1341) informing them of the location and nature of the incident and requesting assistance, followed by
□ A call to your Supervisor informing them of the incident and the steps you have taken to address it.

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
November 27, Math Monday
Factor: (n) 1.  anything that contributes causally to a result. “Participants will get DNA tests and report on their diet, sleep, exercise and numerous other health-affecting factors.” 2) A factor is one of two or more quantities that divide a given quantity without a remainder. For example, 6, 4, 3, and 2 are factors of 12. (3) An amount by which another amount is multiplied or divided. Bread prices increased by a factor of 5.
November 28, Science Tuesday
Catalyst: (n) 1.  Something or someone that causes an important change or event to happen. The town council hopes the new sports arena will act as a catalyst for economic growth.   2.  A substance that makes a chemical reaction happen more quickly without being changed itself. Enzymes are incredibly efficient and highly specific biological catalysts; in fact, the human body wouldn’t exist without them.
November 29, CTE Wednesday
Variable: (adj.) 1. Able or likely to change or be changed. The loan has a variable interest rate. 2 (n) something that changes or that can be changed.   Apparel industry analysts track the different variables affecting the sale, prices, and availability of clothing and other accessories in a given market.
November 30, ELA Thursday
Infer: (v) to form an opinion or to reach a conclusion based on known facts. A federal appeals court ruled that cases should go to trial if “a reasonable person could infer that the defendant acted with the required intent.” I inferred from his silence that he was angry about my decision.
December 1, Social Studies Friday
Era: (n) A period of time that has a particular quality or character.  Long floaty dresses, asymmetrical skirts, flared trousers and pencil designs evoked different eras in fashion. The use of steam for power marked the beginning of an era. President Eisenhower was born in the horse-and-buggy era and led America into the Space Age.

ADDITIONS TO THE BLOG

WEEKLY BULLETIN for Week Beginning 11.20.17

CALL TO ACTION

HSFI GOAL OF ‘EVERY STUDENT FEELING CARED FOR’
In order to achieve this goal of having every student feeling cared for, it is important to use a specific SEL strategy every time you see your students – this is time well invested to let your students know you are looking out for them – once you make this connection, your students will be more apt to go with you on the content of the lesson.  A nice touch to show your care is to be in the hallways during passing and greet your students at the door.
□ If you did not get a chance to sign the SEL Staff Charter, our SEL Coordinators will be in the lobby before and during first period
□ An easy way to show you care is to give Fashion Dollars – it was clear after Friday’s student town halls that students like the rewards we have to offer and want Fashion Dollars - there are many students who still have no Fashion Dollars in their accounts. Please support the PBIS program and give out Fashion Dollars on a daily basis.
□ As part of our PBIS program, HSFI rewards student participation in clubs.  The reward for joining and participating in a club is 30 Fashion Dollars.  This can be completed in several methods:
(1) You can add Fashion Dollars in the student bonus section under employees.
(2) You can create a class for your club in Fashion SOARRS.(it takes the same amount of effort as providing bonus but allows you to continue to add throughout the year).  You can do this by following these directions:
□ Go to employee page
□ Scroll to the bottom of the page where it states MANAGE CLASSES BY PERIOD
□ Choose Period 10 for your club (if you have more than one club that meets the same time you can choose Period 11, 12 and so on.)
□ Pick the day the club meets
□ Select students to add to your class and populate the class – we would suggest adding five at a time because if something happens while adding you can lose your list.

ATTENDANCE SHEETS ARE LEGAL DOCUMENTS
There continue to be issues with staff filling out attendance sheets – absent students are being marked present which could put the school in legal jeopardy.  Make sure your attendance sheets are accurate.
Blue Sheets - Everyday someone's blue sheet is missing.  The blue sheet needs to be returned immediately after 3rd period
□ Attendance Sheets will be on weekly for the week of November 20.  This means every day you will get a new attendance sheet.  The sheets will not be printed until the morning.   They should be in your boxes around 8am.
Absent Notes -  When signing students absent notes please remind them to put their OSIS # (9-digit #) on the notes.  Every note that comes to the office is coded for excused absence.
□ Please return any Confirmation Sheets from September and October Attendance Sheets.  The October Confirmation Sheets need to be printed.  If I get back all the sheets then less sheets will be generated

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Here are some highlights of the best practices shared by HSFI Staff Members.  This round focuses on differentiation/scaffolding strategies in the classroom:

In the Science department, Ms. Pinto, Ms. Barnabee, and Mr. Dawson created a project to conclude the water cycle topic in the Earth Science classes.  The project includes a checklist and other scaffolds for students to be successful.

In the Social Studies Department, Mr. Robinson and Ms. Ruff created a scaffolded activity and a graphic organizer to help their Global ICT students better understand the Hindu Caste System.

If you would like to see all of the activities compiled from last year, as well as the weekly additions, you can check out the shared Google Folder via the link below.

HSFI is a testing site for the SAT – we are seeking for new SAT proctors and Hall Proctors to administer the SAT exam for our site.  See Pam Rodriguez in Room 149 if you are interested in this.

CANNOT LEAVE STUDENTS UNATTENDED
You cannot leave students unattended anywhere in the building – a classroom or office, the Auditorium or Cafeteria – if you have to leave a particular area, ask the students to leave with you.

CHANGES TO THE LATENESS PLAN
If you teach a first or second period class, please continue to stress the importance of getting to school on time.  Here are some important changes to our Lateness Plan that will go into effect on Monday, November 13, to minimize the loss of instruction for students who are not habitually late:
□ Students who are NOT habitually late (defined as having been late 5 or more times) can enter school late and be allowed to go to class up to 8:30 am (1st period) / 9:20 pm (2nd period) – they will be signed in and be given a pass to go to class
□ All Students, habitually late or Not, will NOT be allowed to go to class up after 8:30 am (1st) / 9:20 pm (2nd) – entering class at this point is too much of a disruption to class
□ Habitually late students will be kept in the Auditorium for guidance counselor follow-up regardless of when they arrive late

KEEPING TRACK OF STUDENT ACTIVITY / COMMUNICATING WITH STUDENTS ABOUT SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Tracking Activity
In our effort to understand how ALL our students are doing, we need to know how much students are participating in activities around the building – this includes:
TUTORING / CLUBS & ACTIVITIES / PSAL SPORTS – PRACTICES & GAMES / ESL ACADEMY
MAKE-UP LABS / NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY PEER TUTORING / USING THE COMPUTER LABS
Use this link to keep track of student attendance in these activities - https://sites.google.com/a/hsfi.us/hsfi-staff-portal/attendance-for-student-activities

Communication
Please make sure that you communicate with our students about anything going on in the school – a club meeting, sports game or program opportunity – you can do this by including it in our Daily Announcements email / Jupiter message – here is the procedure for submitting this information:
(2) From there use the Announcement form link on the left hand side of the page - all announcements should be requested by 3:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
