CALL TO ACTION

Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.

LET’S USE THE REMAINING TIME IN 20-21 TO GET READY FOR 21-22

Let’s use the remaining time we have together to put us in the best position to succeed come September.  You will be engaged in planning activities around grading policies, the social emotional learning needs of our students, how best to get us and our students used to being in school again and how we start to engage students in the content of our disciplines.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL GRADE GROUPS THIS MONDAY

This Monday, June 21 from 9:15 to 10:15 am, all teachers will meet in Interdepartmental Grade Groups You’ve begun planning in your departments,  but we need to consider how we are approaching students in each grade across subjects around the following concepts:

□ Social Emotional Learning - How can we make sure students feel ‘Supported & Connected’ and ‘Safe & Comfortable?’

□ Academic Readiness - How can we help students ‘Do School?’

□ HSFI - What makes our school special?

POP-UP VACCINATION SITE AT HSFI THIS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23

I have arranged for a Pop-up Vaccination Site at HSFI this Wednesday, June 23 from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm – please help me spread the word to our students.

Here are the highlights of the logistics / FAQs are below:

□ Our students, any of their friends or family member who needs a vaccine can simply walk into the school and receive the vaccine

All minors who are 12 to 15 must be accompanied to the vaccination site by a parent or guardian, or another adult caregiver designated by the parent/guardian

For minors 16 or 17 years of age, such consent should be provided either in person or by phone

□ People who come to the school to get vaccinated will not need to provide proof of immigration status or a social security number to get vaccinated. ID is only required for proof of age.

□ People who come to the school to get vaccinated do not need health insurance to get vaccinated.

The people giving the vaccine will NOT return to the school for second dose; The people giving the vaccine WILL direct parents/clients to the closest location and provide all of the information necessary to obtain a second dose

Get a COVID-19 Vaccine at Select School Sites

All New Yorkers age 12 and up can now receive a free COVID-19 vaccine! In partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, some school sites will offer vaccination. You can simply walk in with your student, any friend or family member who needs a vaccine, or just get one for yourself. It's quick and easy, and will help you keep yourself, your neighborhood, and your school community safe.

Have questions about the vaccine? Visit nyc.gov/covidvaccine  for all the facts.

Important information:

You will not need to provide proof of immigration status or a social security number to get vaccinated. ID is only required for proof of age.

You do not need health insurance to get vaccinated.

All minors who are 12 to 15 must be accompanied to the vaccination site by a parent or guardian, or another adult caregiver designated by the parent/guardian.

Frequently Asked Questions (from the Provider):

Will the Provider return to the school for Second Dose?

The Provider will NOT return to the school for second dose

The Provider WILL direct parents/clients to the closest location and provide all of the information necessary to obtain a second dose.

How does the provider obtain consent?

School admins should be aware that there are consent guidelines for minors.  The Provider will not vaccinate without parent/guardian consent.  (consent guidelines below)

The Provider is responsible for obtaining consent for the vaccination.

Consent Language:

For minors who are 12 to 17 years old:

Minors (ages 12 to 17) may only receive the Pfizer vaccine.

Minors must have parental, guardian or legal custodian consent, unless the minor is part of a group to whom the law gives the right to consent to their own care (e.g., married minors, minors who are parents or pregnant, and minors in the military).

For minors 16 or 17 years of age, such consent should be provided either in person or by phone, at the time of vaccine appointment. Providers may elect whether to accept a written statement of consent from the parent or guardian, where the parent or guardian is not available by phone to provide consent to vaccinate an unaccompanied minor. The written statement must include the minor's name and date of birth, and the parent or guardian's name, phone number, and signature. For more information on which vaccination sites accept written consent, please call 877-VAX-4NYC or 877-829-4692.

For minors 12 through 15 years of age, additionally, an adult caregiver should accompany the minor. If the adult caregiver is not the parent or guardian, the adult caregiver should be designated by the parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must still provide consent to the vaccination.

 LOOKING TO 21-22

As we prepare to end another extraordinary year of helping students succeed, we would like to alert you of a few important dates and announcements.

The DOE is expected to share guidance that will help us better prepare for reopening in September in a few weeks. This guidance will include DOE plans to ensure the health and safety of our students, families, and staff members. We welcome the opportunity to return 100% to the building next academic year. The expected return date for staff is September 9, 2021.

It is recommended that staff stay connected via email during the summer months and check-in with their immediate supervisor when needed. As always, make sure your contact information is up to date to inform you about any issues that impact you. Finally, you’ve got some time for yourself. Enjoy it to the fullest.

MEASURES OF STUDENT LEARNING

Just letting the teaching staff know that we had to choose Citywide Option for our MOSL based on the guidance from the NYC Department of Education.

Here was the guidance I received regarding MOSL:

A. Question to ask yourselves, Is the school giving/ has given any of these assessments this school year? (These are the only MOSL eligible assessments this year, no Regents will count for MoSL this year).

NYC Performance Tasks (all available grades and subjects)

Running Records (Fountas & Pinnell and TCRWP

Degrees of Reading Power (DRP, MSQI Schools only)

B.    If the answer is no, we are not administering any of the MOSL-eligible assessments above- what do we do?

If a school is not using (and doesn’t plan to use) any MOSL-eligible assessments, then the School-based MOSL Committee can only recommend the citywide measure (see FAQ 3.4.1 FAQs can be found here ).

Frequently Asked Question/ Citywide Option defined further:

If my MOSL committee chooses the Citywide option and we choose not to administer one of the listed assessments, what will my teacher's scores be based on?

MOSL scores will be based on the above assessments taken by students across the city where a growth measure will be calculated using the NYC DOE's Growth Model. All teachers in a specific school will receive the same measure, regardless of the grade/subject(s) they teach. In other words, if the school selects a schoolwide measure, the MOSL rating will be the same for all teachers in that school. All teachers in all schools that select the citywide measure will receive the same MOSL rating. (Advance FAQs 3.1.1  FAQs can be found here)

The citywide measure includes all student scores from all MOSL-eligible assessments  administered in all schools in the city.

MOSL-eligible assessments are the same for schoolwide measures and the citywide measure (see next question for a list, or FAQ 3.2.1 FAQs can be found here).

All teachers in all schools that select the citywide measure will receive the same MOSL rating.

COMING FALL 2021: PROJECT 24/7 RESPECT

Project 24/7 Respect is a program, created by the Boston Public Schools (BPS) Office of Equity, to empower students to address and report bias-based and sexual misconduct, whether it is in-person or online. Students in grades 9 through 12 watch and discuss the film, "24/7 Respect," to better understand how to identify and report bias-based and sexual misconduct. According to the creators of this program, the process enables students to deepen their understanding of how to foster a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all. The BPS Office of Equity launched 24/7 Respect in Spring 2019 in response to an alarming nationwide increase in students engaging in bias-based and sexual misconduct, including posting offensive racial comments online and "sexting." This will be another program that we have to support student well-being.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2021 INTEREST?

If you are interested in working Summer School, please take a moment to indicate your initial interest and availability to work summer school.

The general framework to Summer School will include:

□ Run from 7/6-8/13 Mondays through Thursdays with Hours TBD.

□ We will need to offer students a combination of remote and in-person classes (In person classes will take place at Park West HS). The majority of classes will be centered around NX support, however there may also be some full length (45 hour) summer school classes as well.

Again, once we get more guidance on summer, we will connect to work around this framework.

LAUNCH OF ‘LET’S TALK NYC’

In partnership with the DOE, the School of Mental Health Program, the Jed Foundation, and Ogilvy Health, the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health has launched “Let’s Talk NYC,” a self-guided online training that prepares all high school staff, regardless of their role, to become mental-health allies.  After completing the “Let’s Talk NYC” training, staff will receive digital and physical badges that will help identify them as adults who will listen to students and support their mental health.  In the fall, all schools will receive posters to hang in their school building to help reinforce “Let’s Talk NYC” messages, by addressing the stigma of mental health issues, encouraging students to share how they are feeling with school staff, and promoting help-seeking behavior.
