WEEKLY BULLETIN for Week Beginning 5.22.17

PBIS CALL TO ACTION
We moving the CALL TO ACTION to the beginning of the Weekly Bulletin to emphasize the needed follow-up to these items…

DOWN THE HOMESTRETCH…
We are officially in the homestretch – we have 3 weeks of classes left before Regents examinations.  Make sure your students know this and appreciate the importance of finishing the school year strong.  Tie this strong finish to college and summer school.  Students must understand the grades that they receive in June will be the ones that colleges will see and ultimately determine whether or not they are scheduled for summer school or not.
PROMOTE THE TUTORING THAT WILL TAKE PLACE IN GETTING STUDENTS READY FOR THE REGENTS

SENIORITIS…A SERIOUS ILLNESS
We all know how serious an illness that SENIORITIS is – teachers of seniors – please stay on top of them to make sure they know where they stand in your classes – please communicate with families with a direct phone call if a senior is in danger of failing which will certainly impact their graduation.  I am not allowed by NY State law to allow a student to participate in graduation ceremonies unless they have fulfilled all graduation requirements.

REFERRAL CHANGES – COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
We made some changes to the Referral system – in the “Guardian Contacted” section, we added a new check box question where you identify how you have been communicating with families – we understand that your communication is not limited to parent calls.
The choices for “Guardian Contacted” are now:
□ Phone Call
□ Jupiter Message
□ Progress Report Sent Home
□ Emailed Parent
We also added a short answer question labeled “Please provide your tutoring days/hours for this course:”
Hopefully, these changes are helpful to the teacher – school communication!

MAINTAINING SCHOOL TONE
As we enter the home stretch of the school year, it is critical that we need to be UNIFIED as a staff in enforcing our school rules to maintain our school tone.  Please be consistent and model the correct behaviors our students need in order to SOARR to college and career readiness.
NO FOOD IN CLASSROOMS – students can only eat in the student cafeteria & the student lounge - no food should in classrooms before, during or after school – no staff or students should be eating in any computer lab
DRESS CODE – every week there are zero dress code infractions which is certainly not reality– nobody is reporting these infractions – please make these referrals, so we can follow up with these students and help set the proper tone and attire here at HSFI
PROPER USE OF HALL / HEALTH CENTER PASSES – students can only leave the classroom with a pass / students going to the Falcon Health Center must use that specific pass
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT POLICY - electronic equipment are only allowed to be used in classrooms for instructional purposes – students must not be allowed to take out their phones during class and do not let students charge this equipment in your classrooms
ELEVATORS – students are not allowed on staff elevators unless they have their own elevator card / ask students to show their elevator passes when they are in those elevators

SAVE THE DATE – STAFF END OF YEAR PARTY
The End of Year Staff Celebration will be on Thursday, June 8 at 4pm (after our Staff Development Day) at Jake’s Saloon on 23rd Street & 7th Avenue.  Details & Invite Coming Soon!

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Here are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of intervisitations; all are focused on the use of TWR, other scaffolds, as well as the use of socio-emotional practices in class.

In the Science department, Ms. Herrick created a TWR activity for her Living Environment classes involving antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  Students used a quick outline to collect evidence from an article.

In the Math department, Ms. Chung, Ms. Medina, Ms. Latanza, Ms. Dye and Ms. Schlein created a TWR error analysis involving special proportions in right triangles.  Students were asked to analyze the work of two students and determine why their results were different.

In the English Department Ms. Abramyan created a protocol to help her seniors navigate high level student led discussions synthesizing ideas around their semester long student of Junot Diaz.

To see these activities and more join the HSFI Google+ Page found here. https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/108340703393557258737

*If any staff member would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice, send it to Ms. Paz at SPaz@schools.nyc.gov or Mr. Kearns at kkearns@schools.nyc.gov

BOTH SBO VOTES ARE APPROVED
Both School Based Option (SBO) votes were approved.  Our school schedule will remain the same for 2017-18.  All compensatory time positions were approved with at least 55% of the school staff.  I will work with Ms. Perez, our UFT Chapter Leader, on getting these postings out to everyone.  These positions below are either new, no staff member served in this position this term or the term of the position is up (this year it is only the Computer Technology Coordinator).  The application process for these positions will be an online application.  The hope is that we will have the budget to support as many of these positions as possible.  The reality is that we are never able to fund all these positions, but approval gives us the option of doing so.

HSFI GRADUATION ON JUNE 27
Our graduation will take place on Tuesday, June 27 at 3pm at the United Palace (Manhattan – 175th Street & Broadway) - https://www.unitedpalace.org/
We moved our graduation from Hunter College to United Palace because our students will get 7 or 8 tickets each as opposed to 3 tickets.
Tuesday, June 27 is a regular school day and the day before the last day of school.  We will need some teachers to be at school for the limited number of students that will probably be in attendance.  Staff can also decide to attend graduation that will include help setting up beginning at 2pm.  All staff – please fill out this survey to list your preference for this day:

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL REMINDERS

SURVEY ON FEEDBACK FROM RIGOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & INTERVISITATIONS
In planning for next year, we want your feedback and reflections from the professional development and intervisitations from this work’s on our Problem of Practice – There is inconsistency across classrooms in delivery of rigorous instruction that is “customized, inclusive and motivating.”
Here are the questions from this brief survey:
(1) Please identify 1-2 main takeaways from our professional learning sessions focused on building the level of rigor in instruction that you have implemented in your classroom practice.
(2) Please identify 1-2 most useful strategies that you observed from classroom intervisitations that you have implemented in your classroom practice.
(3) Please identify what you would like to see in next year's professional development plan related to our school's problem of practice that 'There is inconsistency across classrooms in delivery of rigorous instruction that is “customized, inclusive and motivating?'
Here is the survey link:

SPECIAL EDUCATION IMPORTANT REMINDERS
As we begin to plan for next year we have pushed up IEP meetings for students in order to ensure their appropriate placement for the 2017-18 school year. With this in mind, you may have received an influx of IEP Teacher reports within the last few weeks. Your feedback and participation is crucial in our being able to create a quality IEP. Please take a moment to complete these forms and let the teacher who sent you the form, or Ms. McGuinness know if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of students with disabilities!

OPERATIONAL NEED TO KNOW
CHECK YOUR DOE & HSFI EMAILS EVERYDAY

SECURE YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS & VALUABLES
Please make sure your personal belongings and valuables are secure.  We will be touching base with all staff to insure that every staff member has a place to secure their belongings.  We love our students, but unfortunately we must take these precautions to deter this type of behavior.

MICROSOFT OFFICE 365 EMAIL MIGRATION
Mr. Abdallah has put together a PDF guide to Microsoft Office 365 Email Migration.  Please look it over and follow the directions to complete this migration.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES FOR GLENN SEARS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
We would like to make one more delivery of used printer cartridges this year in order to receive payment that will go toward the Glen Sears Scholarship Fund.  As always, used printer cartridges can be dropped off at Room 244, and left outside the door if locked, before 3PM.

WAGEWORKS / TRANSIT BENEFITS PROGRAM – SUMMER SUSPENSION
Employees who wish to suspend their transit deductions on all summer checks and resume these deductions in September must enter the following dates in Payroll Portal up to May 1:

UNSUPERVISED STUDENTS IN CLASSROOMS & OFFICES BECOMING A PROBLEM
Under no circumstances are you to leave students unsupervised in your classroom or office, or any other space in the building if you are a coach or club/activity supervisor.  Ask students to step out of this location while you are gone and have them reenter when you return.  If anything happens to those students in that space, you will be held responsible and need to explain why you allowed these students to be unsupervised.

STAFF MEMBERS WHO SOARR
The SOARRing staff showcased below come from nominations from their supervisors and their colleagues.  You can nominate a colleague by using the email: PBISDataTeam@hsfi.us
Please include the reason why your colleague has SOARRed!

Thank you to ALL THE HSFI STAFF MEMBERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TOWARDS OUR AIR CONDITIONING CAMPAIGN – your personal contributions and all the emails and social media posts with your family and friends were crucial towards raising over $23,000 towards our ACs – that number got us to the point where the Advisory Board and our anonymous donor took care of the remainder of the funds.

Thank you to MS. DAVID for all her efforts in supporting our Air Conditioning campaign as our HSFI Alumni Association Director – Ms. David played a critical role in getting our alumni behind the campaign.

Thank you to all the staff members who have contributed to our best practices Google + Community over the last two weeks - MS. ABRAMYAN, MS. HERRICK, MS. CHUNG, MS. MEDINA, MS. LaTANZA, MS. DYE & MS. SCHLEIN – the sharing spirit at HSFI is alive and well!

Once again. Thank you to all the HSFI staff members that contributed to the awesome annual Fashion Show – our Industry Show was a huge success – high quality fashions, smooth production and almost $100,000 raised for the Advisory Board that will get to the school soon after.

Thank you to MS. BROADBELT for her leadership as the Fashion Show Director and teaching a senior Fashion Design class at the same time.  It takes a lot to do this job and Ms. Broadbelt stepped up to produce a spectacular show!  Everyone should remember that Ms. Broadbelt had to produce two different shows – the public and the industry.  Bravo!

Thank you to our other senior Fashion Design teachers - MS. BALMIR, MS. RICCI, MS. CISSE, MS. DAVID, MS. PARISSE, MS. YOUNGBLOOD & MS. BATTS – the fashions were quite impressive – every year I am blown away with the show and it is through these teachers’ efforts that our students can produce this work.

Thank you to MS. DONLIN (FEIL) for working with our models – our models demonstrated great composure and coordination down the runway.

Thank you to MS. CARTER for all of her amazing efforts as the liaison to our Advisory Board and her ability to manage all of our industry partnerships – not an easy feat considering her responsibility to communicate and connect with students, teachers, families and industry partners.
Ms. Carter is the unifying force connecting the school to the outside fashion and business worlds.

It literally takes a cast of thousands to put on this show – we received help from staff in a variety of areas from working backstage to managing our student models to signing in industry show guests to handing out programs - Thank you to MS. ALLEN, MS. KING, MS. RIVIERE, MS. ROJAS, MS. ARCAMAY, MR. RUSSELL, MS. WEINREB, MS. STAMBOULY, MS. CHRISTINA VEGA, MS. MELENCIANO, MS. NOBLE (PAGLIARO), MR. CARRANZA, MS. COLLINS, MR. CORBY, MR. MATELUS, MS. CUFFIE, MS. SHARON MEDINA, MR. ABDALLAH, MS. SAN JORGE, MR. JOCELYN, MS. HERZOG & MS. IANNIELLO.

Thank you to MS. VACCARO for all her efforts in coordinating our fashion marketing students to work as our student monitors for the shows – these students are great representatives of HSFI.

Thank you to MS. VELEZ for being the point person for ticket sales in the FLY store – it was a huge job considering the amount of tickets we sold this year.

Thank you to our staff models - MS. BAILEY, MS. SAN JORGE & MR. RODRIGUEZ – we are thrilled they have come back to their teaching responsibilities and not pursued modeling careers.

I apologize profusely if I missed anyone!!!
Please let me know if I missed your contributions to this team effort!!!

Thank you to our Prom chaperones who stayed up late on Saturday night to insure all went smoothly for our seniors - MS. PARISSE, MS. CARTER, MS. BATTS, MS. VACCARO, MS. CHAVEZ, MS. DAVID, MS. YOUNGBLOOD, MS. BROADBELT, MR. CARRANZA & MR. RUSSELL.
Thank you to MR. RAU & MS. SAN JORGE for organizing and executing the event and all their efforts as our coordinators of student activities.  A couple of special thanks yous to MS. BROADBELT & MS. Thank you to MS. PEREZ for executing the School Based Options votes for the school to insure that our school schedule and compensatory time positions are set up for next year.

Thank you to MS. PINTO for leading the HSFI Stunts team to a 5th place finish in all of NYC!  7th last year – 5th this year – the team is getting better each year thanks to the efforts of Ms. Pinto.  The Stunts team members have a wonderful spirit and wear their Stunts gear with tremendous pride.

Thank you to MR. ALVAREZ for his efforts as coach of the Girls Outdoor track team – the team is still one of the top teams in Manhattan and becoming a force citywide.

Thank you to MR. MENDEZ for his efforts as coach of the Girls Wrestling team – many of our wrestlers placed high in the City individual championships.

Thank you to MS. DONLIN (FEIL) for her efforts as coach of the Boys Volleyball team – it is a rebuilding year that will hopefully yield great results in the future.

Thank you to MS. BOHNER, MS. DRABMAN & MS. THOMAS for going above and beyond to make sure all our ELLs were tested in the three day NYSESLAT exam!

Thank you to MS. DAWSON for filling in for a colleague and extending her work day to make sure our students had a chance to experience a production at Julliard.

Thank you to MS. ADAMCZYK & MS. STAMBOULY for leading the National Honor Society – their induction ceremony was this past Friday in celebrating our best and brightest.

Nominated by MS. DAHILL, Thank you to MS. EISENBERG for her efforts with our NYC DOE LGBTQ Author Program.  Ms. Eisenberg's leadership in the program was shown as she taught the book ‘Adam’ to her class.  Her teaching was deeply meaningful to her students as she worked very closely with the book’s author – she participated in separate trainings and then planned and prepared accordingly.  Without her efforts the LGBTQ panel and its success would never have happened at HSFI.

Nominated by MS. DAHILL, Thank you to MS. PADRON & MS. NAGHI for their efforts in getting the Gay-Straight Alliance and RAPP (Relationship Abuse Prevention Program) involved with the LGBTQ Panel.  Their knowledge and speaking skills were valued as they presented on the diverse LGBTQ panel that included the NYC Department of Education Deputy Chancellor and NY State Senator Hoylman.  The panel reflected nicely on HSFI!

SIA, MS. VONGERICHTEN, MS. PADRON & MS. SAN JORGE – they will also be doing interviews with students from all grades about how they feel about our college access support systems.

Thank you to MR. RAU & MS. SAN JORGE for organizing and executing the event and all their efforts as our coordinators of student activities.

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING RELATED VTODs
Monday, May 22
Conscientious: (adj.) 1. governed by conscience. As a conscientious judge, she does not let personal prejudices influence her decisions. 2.  Careful; painstaking; meticulous. Since the students had been conscientious about all aspects of their group project, they were thrilled to receive an A+.
Tuesday, May 23
Havoc :(n) widespread destruction or devastation. Numerous studies demonstrate that mental stress can wreak physical havoc on workers. The blackout created havoc in the city.
Wednesday, May 24
Gamut: (n) a complete extent or range. “A visit with a long-lost cousin might arouse emotions that run the gamut from regret and sadness to joy and excitement.”  Chronic medical conditions on campus run the gamut from asthma to Crohn's disease, diabetes and depression.
Thursday May 25
Ruminate: (v) To think carefully and deeply about something.  Before I make any major decisions, I need   to ruminate on all the facts.  “Ruminating is considered a negative form of self-reflection when it offers few new insights and only intensifies the emotional and psychological distress we already feel.”
Friday, May 26
Reappraise: (v) to estimate something's value again; to appraise anew. The historian, Richard   Shenkman, writes that our instinct is not to reappraise our reaction to something but rather to go with the instinctive reaction even if it doesn’t suit our actual circumstances.
