CALL TO ACTION

Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.

HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS

WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS IN CRISIS

We’ve had an extraordinary number of students who are in crisis - some have expressed suicidal thoughts and some have harmed themselves - please get a pulse of how your students are doing emotionally and if they are in trauma, let the Wellness Center know

HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE

IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR NEW GRADING POLICY

With our new grading policy in place, work with students so that they understand the policy and the idea behind a growth mindset that embraces learning from feedback and that it is alright for students to not get it right the first time.

Here is an anonymous email I received from a HSFI Senior:

Good Afternoon Mr.Blank,

So this whole new grading system is really making it difficult for all of us and it's dropping down our grades a lot, which for us seniors is a huge thing because we are graduating and the colleges will also look at it. Please do something about it at the end of the day it's affecting us a lot.

Best Regards,

Anonymous

NEW ITEMS:

TEACHERS CREATING A DIGITAL CLASSROOM

Teachers and related service providers will be provided a window from Sept. 9 to Oct. 1 to create and set up a digital classroom and will be paid $225 for this initial set up time. A supplemental check will be issued on Oct. 31 to compensate you.  There is nothing to apply for in order to receive the supplemental payment.  Staff coming on payroll after 10/1 must submit "standard timekeeping documentation (per session, coverage sheets, etc." to receive compensation.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAKE ATTENDANCE USING YOUR JUPITER CLASS LISTS ON TUESDAY

Thank you for your help in sending students down to the auditorium during Periods 2 & 8 last week to get their most up-to-date class program.  We still have a large number of students who are in the wrong class.

HELP NEEDED:  Please take attendance next Tuesday using your Jupiter class lists / do not use your bubble sheets.

If a student is in your classroom and not on your roster, send them down to Room 101 to see their guidance counselor.

One BIG clarification – we still need to do bubble sheets for the legal requirement – we just need you to take attendance off the Jupiter lists to identify those students in the wrong class.

Thank you – sorry for the additional work but this is important

HSFI's RACE & EQUITY NEXT STEPS...

As we get on firmer footing with the start of the school year, we would like to build on our previous efforts around Race & Equity to move this work forward.

Our Race & Equity Youth Leaders are in place with their plans for celebrating our school’s diversity throughout the school year.

We would like to have these student leaders partner with HSFI staff.  We wanted to open up this opportunity to partner with our student leaders to all HSFI staff members regardless of whether you are new to the school community or a HSFI veteran involved in our previous efforts that centered around our book study of ‘Not Light, But Fire’ and our instructional rounds in collaboration with Harvard University’s Reimagining Integration project.

The plan is to have staff and students meet around 2 times a month on Wednesdays from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 4:30 on selected dates where we are partnering with an organization called ‘Diversity Talks’ to lead this student-staff group in professional development sessions around the following topics:

□ Anti-Racism: How to Talk About Race (Part I)

□ Anti-Racism: How to Talk About Race (Part II)

□ Confronting Your Unconscious: Addressing Implicit Bias

□ The Elephants in the Room: Power and Privilege

□ Boys Will Be Boys: The Cycle of Toxic Masculinity

□ Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps: Examining Classism

□ Reconciliation: The Power of Collective Accountability

The hope is that this community of staff and students will help develop some of our ‘Other Professional Work’ on Wednesdays focused on these Race & Equity issues.

All staff participating in this work will be paid per session for your time.  This opportunity is open to all school titles – you do have to be a teacher to get involved.

These race and equity efforts are a big part of our Superintendent’s priorities, so getting involved is an excellent resume builder for one’s tenure portfolio.

To be clear, the first time commitment you would need to make is this Wednesday, October 13 from 3:00 to 4:30 for the first PD session with Diversity Talks.

Please just email me - dblank@hsfi.us or dblank@schools.nyc.gov if you are interested in being part of our Race & Equity Leadership Team.  All are welcome! Thank you!

STUDENTS SWIPING ID CARDS STARTING THIS MONDAY

This Tuesday students will need to swipe their identification cards to enter the school building.  If students do not have an ID card, they will need to type in their 9 digit ID numbers to enter the building.  This past week over 450 students received their ID cards.

Students without ID cards should follow the path designated by yellow tape.  Jackson will assist those without IDs and move them along to the health screen.  In an email to families, Daryl will be asking students to have program cards ready as they come into the building.

Students with ID cards should proceed down the way set by orange tape.  They will be able to scan in without an issue and move along to the health screen.
