HSFI STAFF CHARTER OF FEELINGS SIGNING EVENT THIS FRIDAY!
‘HSFI Staff Charter of Feelings’ Signing Event will take place this Friday from 7:30am – 9:00am outside of the copy room.  Please come by on this morning to look over and sign the document we have been working on throughout the school year.  There will be breakfast for all staff to help celebrate the signing.  We will be signifying with our signatures that ‘emotions matter’ at the High School of Fashion Industries and we will work together to build a community that takes everyone’s feelings into account as we interact with one another.  This document will be a “living, breathing” document and will change as we engage with this social-emotional work.  We will begin to use Social-Emotional Learning techniques including, but not limited to the ‘Mood Meter,’ during HSFI staff meetings including focus groups, department meetings, professional learning communities, committee meetings to get us familiar with these strategies.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE VISUAL MERCHANDISING & GRAPHICS & ILLUSTRATION DEPARTMENTS
Both the NYC Department of Education & NY State Education Department were blown away by the quality of the Visual Merchandising and Graphics & Illustration departments this past Wednesday during their accreditation review!  The four reviewers were impressed by our faculty, our students and the whole school during their visit.  As always, this success can be attributed to a team effort by HSFI teachers, students, parents, industry partners and supervisory staff.  The result is continuation of additional funding for our CTE programs and the ability to screen students who are interested in our programs.  Thank you to all our staff that participated in the review!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. PAGLIARO & HER SUCCESSFUL ‘SHARK TANK’ BUSINESS PRESENTATION EVENT WITH CLARK UNIVERSITY
The Fashion Marketing department’s ‘Shark Tank’ event under the direction of Ms. Pagliaro was a huge success!  All of her students presented high quality business proposals to a panel of Clark University business students and HSFI alumni.  It was awesome to see our students in fine form making oral presentations to a large audience with their professional proposals.  Thank you to Ms. Pagliaro for making this event happen!

PBIS CALL TO ACTION

MAKE SURE YOU REFER STUDENTS
We cannot help students out, if we do not know if they are having problems – fill out referrals as necessary including academic ones which will refer to the National Honor Society HW Help.  We hope to begin this service when we return from next week’s break.

USE OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES FORM
Make sure you are using the ‘Attendance for Student Activities’ link - when students go to a sports practice, attend tutoring, or do service for you – LET US KNOW through this form located on the Staff Homepage – we need to know these students are headed in the right direction just as much as we need to know they are going in the wrong direction.

ENCOURAGE HSFI STUDENTS TO CHECK HSFI EMAILS
Supporting our college readiness theme, remind your students that they should be checking their HSFI email every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI every day because they will lose out on many opportunities if they don’t do so.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL REMINDERS

THE WRITING REVOLUTION UPDATES
9th and 10th grade academic teachers should continue to focus on the TWR skills with an emphasis on OUTLINING.  Here's a link to a review sheet of the February focus skill created by Ms. McGoldrick:

HOMEWORK POLICY – NO NEW HW ON WEDNESDAYS
Clarification for you and our students – NO NEW HW ON WEDNESDAYS means that no new homework can be assigned on Wednesdays.  Assignments can be given on Tuesdays (or other days) and due on Wednesdays.  Please spread the word to students so they are clear on the policy.

INFORMATION ON KNOWING WHICH STUDENTS HAVE IEPs
With the change of programs, you may now have a student in your class who has an IEP. In order to determine students with IEPs, check official class. If there is a letter at the beginning or the end or the official class, the student will have an IEP.

By logging onto SESIS ( https://sesis.nycenet.edu/userlogin.aspx ) will be able to review your students IEP and determine their individual needs. Please contact room 329 (ext3294) if you need assistance or have questions.

Teacher reports are a mandatory component of the IEP process. In order to effectively include teacher reports within the IEP they must be submit within four days of being requested. Please submit teacher reports when asked to do so and participate in IEP meetings when invited. Your participation and insight is crucial in creating a quality IEP and best serving our students with disabilities.

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.
LEXICAL ARRAY - SLOW: from DAWDLE to STALL
Monday, February 13
Dawdle: (v) to move or act too slowly; to take a long time to do something. Last night, I dawdled over my assignment and now must finish it on the subway. “Don't dawdle; we're late already.”
Tuesday, February 14
Languid: (adj.) slow or lazy and involving very little energy or activity. We spent a languid afternoon by the pool, doing nothing more than sipping cool drinks and dipping our feet in the water.
Wednesday, February 15
Sluggish: (adj.) moving or reacting more slowly than normal; not active or brisk. “Playing their second game in two nights, the Capitals looked sloppy and sluggish in a 4-2 loss to the Maple Leafs.”  “For parts of the industry, 2016 was a sluggish year for video games.”
Thursday, February 16
Lag: (v) The act of slowing down or falling behind. In a rally, Thursday, Renzi promised that he was lagging by only “a few thousand” votes. (n)  a delay or period of waiting between one event and another.  “Typically, there’s about a six-month lag between the time demand starts to slow and prices begin to fall.”
Friday, February 17
Decelerate: (v.)- to go slower, especially in a vehicle: ''A green traffic light ahead could turn amber, so we need to be prepared to decelerate as we approach.”
