CALL TO ACTION

Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.

HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS

GET TO KNOW YOUR STUDENTS

There is no better way to show your care for students than to know their name, pronounce their name correctly and know what pronoun that they identify with.  No matter what role you serve in the school, please make this a top priority.

HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE

IMPORTANCE OF STUDENT CHOICE & LEADERSHIP

Students are engaged best when they have a voice in their learning and put in positions of leadership.  No matter what role you serve in the school, please keep this in mind as you interact with our young people.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HELPING OUR INCOMING STUDENTS ON THE FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL - UTILIZING OUR STUDENT LEADERS

Many of our incoming students will have a “deer in the headlights” look over the next couple of days.  We have asked our 175 Youth Leaders to look out for them all around the building in the hallways, classrooms and cafeteria.  They will be wearing their SEL Youth Leader shirts to make them recognizable.  Please excuse any lateness from these students as we have asked them to guide our incoming students to where they need to be which may result in them being late to class themselves.  Thank you in advance for this help!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OUR TOOLS TO COMBAT COVID-19

We have the tools to combat COVID at HSFI - we all need to be on the same page and execute these tools:

□ Stay home if you do not feel well

□ Health Screening Tool - https://healthscreening.schools.nyc/ - fill it out before entering the building each day

□ Masks - if you are in the building, you need to be wearing a mask

□ Physical distancing between students when possible

□ Promoting Vaccination - a vaccine clinic will be in the building all this week

□ Random COVID testing - our first scheduled testing date is September 21

□ Students and staff showing COVID symptoms during school will be sent home and get tested

If you have a student showing symptoms, call x1491 or x1010 and we will get the student to the Health Center for evaluation

□ Different rules for vaccinated and unvaccinated students who have close contact with someone with COVID

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROGRAMMING OFFICE MESSAGE TO TEACHING STAFF FOR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Good luck on your first day with students!

Until program changes are complete, please refer to your daily attendance white sheets as your official roster for that day. If a student arrives at your class and their name is not on your period attendance white sheet, ask to see their program. You might need to help direct them to the right location, or if they happen to have an outdated version of their schedule direct them to the programming office (room 127) or the main office (room 125). You can also check what their most up-to-date schedule is with this tool on the dashboard

The other places to see your roster (the Data Dashboard and Jupiter) have a delay -- they are updated at the end of the day manually.

On your Data Dashboard Roster page, you can download a roster that includes student email addresses, pronouns/preferred names, course/section, and period.

Program changes will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during lunch periods in the Auditorium & Guidance suite. Only students who are missing a program on Monday should go to their Guidance Counselor, otherwise even if a student is adamant they are in the wrong class they will follow their schedule on Monday. Students will be contacted directly about program changes. The programming office has prepared an FAQ that counselors and other staff members are using to provide clear, equitable messaging to students about program changes. Check that out here

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REDESIGNED WEDNESDAY INFORMATION - FOLLOW-UP REQUIRED

We are looking forward to launching the Redesigned Wednesday program on September 22, and we are planning for all staff and students to know their schedules for that day by Sunday, September 19 (assuming programming changes go smoothly). In order to meet this timeline, we are asking all teaching staff to indicate their preferences for their Wednesday programs by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 14.

To indicate your preferences for the Wednesday activities, please complete this form by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 14 (must be signed in to your @hsfi.us google account to complete). If you do not complete the form, you will be assigned a schedule according to staffing and school needs. The programming office will do its best to accommodate everyone's preferences, but final assignments will be based on the needs of our students.

Keep an eye on your mailbox for a printed sheet of mini-schedules that are sized to fit the reverse of your school ID card. There is some (limited) blank space where you can fill in your program after it is set (magnifying glass not included).

Thank you to the staff who set aside time in August to define and develop the Redesigned Wednesday program: Ms. Dye, Mr. Knowlton,  Ms. La Tanza, Ms. Leighton, Ms. Looser, Ms. Molloy, Mr. Ng, Mr. Russell, Mr. Stampone, and Ms. Zubrovich-Gansi.

Thank you to all the staff who contributed much-needed feedback and questions over the summer in an earlier survey. Your ongoing reflections will help us strengthen this program as we roll it out.

Feel free to reach out to Ms. Dye with questions or concerns - sdye@hsfi.us

COLLEGE INFORMATION FOR CLASSROOM & OFFICE BANNERS

In an effort to get our students college focused, we have our college banners placed outside of our classrooms and offices – we also have a bulletin board outside of Room 127 that lists all the colleges that are represented by our staff.

If you are a new staff member or are a returning staff member that needs an updated banner, please fill out this Google Form that will go to Ms. Kate McKeon, our amazing college counselor – she is Room 729 if you want to stop by and say hello.  Thank you in advance for doing this to model the importance of college.
