CALL TO ACTION

Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.

HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS

COMMUNICATE ABOUT STUDENTS’ WELL-BEING

Please follow up with appropriate outreach through Teacher Notes & Referrals for students needing additional help emotionally and/or academically.  The more we know about our students, the better we can help them.

HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE

THE SECOND MARKING PERIOD HAS BEGUN

We are now in the second marking period which is crucial to the ultimate success or failure of our students.  If students fail this marking period, they are programmed for summer school and have their promotion in doubt.  Let students know this and please make sure students have an opportunity to redo any submitted work to reinforce a growth mindset.

EVACUATION DRILL NOTIFICATION - WEDNESDAY MARCH 16TH & FRIDAY MARCH 18TH (PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES DAYS)

The first evacuation drill (used to be called fire drills) for the spring term will be conducted on Wednesday March 16th, 2022, at 3:35 PM.

Our second evacuation drill will be conducted on Friday March 18th, 2022, at 11:25 AM.  Students will be able to return to the building for lunch immediately after the drill.

Often, the fire alarm system alerts staff and students to start an evacuation. However, there may also be times when a Public Address announcement starts an evacuation. Announcements will begin with “Attention” followed by specific directions. Announcements are made twice.

Students should be reminded to:

□ Not to leave classroom belongings behind.

□ Form a single file line.

□ In cold weather, students should be reminded to take their coats.

□ However, students wearing exercise or gym clothes should not return to the locker room.

Teachers should:

□ Grab evacuation folder (with attendance sheet and Assembly cards).

□ Lead students to evacuation location as identified on Fire Drill Posters.

□ Use the nearest stairwell, NEVER use elevators.

□ Always listen for additional directions.

□ Take attendance and account for students.

□ Report injuries, problems, or missing students to school staff and first responders using the Assembly Card method.

BENEFITS TO TAKING ACCURATE JUPITER ATTENDANCE (INCLUDING LATENESS)

Thank you for your continued efforts to enter timely and accurate Jupiter attendance daily. Here are some of the things we are able to do as a result:

#1 - Daily Possible Cut Reports

Each afternoon a report is generated and organized for overall, by counselor, by period, and by teacher of possible cuts. These are students who were marked present in at least two periods of the day but marked absent from a later period. These reports allow teachers to discuss with the student the following day and, if necessary, update their Jupiter records. Continue to have these conversations with students so they know the importance of attending every class period every day. This is especially important for students who are missing their last period of the day because they are leaving the building early.

#2 - Weekly Cut Reports

Each Friday, a weekly possible cut report is generated. This list is shared with the counselors and the peace office. The peace office is issuing detentions.

#3 - Weekly Late Reports

Each Friday, a weekly late to class report is generated. This report looks at lateness by period and helps capture (a) students late to school and (b) students who linger in the hallways and are late. Please continue to mark students late if they enter your class after the music has stopped playing. Your accurate records here help us follow up with the students who are negatively impacting hallway tone. This list will also be used to conduct follow-up conversations and possible detentions for students.

#4 - Weekly Perfect Attendance

Each Friday, a weekly perfect attendance list will be generated and students rewarded with Fashion Dollars. This list is based on being marked present (zero absences and zero lates) in all of their classes for the week.

Additionally the Attendance team is using CAASS exit swipe information to communicate with families when students are leaving the building early.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR SCHOOL SAFETY & STUDENT WELLNESS

Here are some important reminders for School Safety & Student Wellness – please read carefully and follow up accordingly.  Thank you!

Mandated Reporting

Mandated reporting refers to the legal obligation to report abuse. All staff members at the HS Fashion Industries are mandated reporters.  This means we are legally required to report suspected cases of abuse.  Abuse can include physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, and/or exposure to unsafe environments, such as drug use or domestic violence.  In all cases only suspicion is required.  Should you suspect abuse it is important that you act immediately.  This means notifying AP Raschilla, or AP Reyes.  Notifications should not occur via email or text.  You must speak to either of the supervisors listed above.  If they are not available, you should contact your immediate supervisor.  Please do not allow the student to leave, as a warm hand off is required.  A warm hand off ensures that one adult receives the student from another adult.  Notifications should be immediate.  As soon as you are aware of the issue it should be reported to a supervisor.  While you will never be asked to investigate the matter, you may be asked to provide the details of what you saw or heard.

Student - Staff Confidentiality

Confidentiality between staff and students does not exist in matters where someone is being harmed or thinking of harming someone else or themselves.

Warm Handoff

□ Immediate reporting and warm hand off are also required in matters regarding suicidal ideation.  Do not wait to report any concern involving suicidal ideation or self-harm.  Experts in the field have shared these warning signs:

□ Talking about suicide — for example, making statements such as "I'm going to kill myself," "I wish I were dead" or "I wish I hadn't been born"

□ Getting the means to take your own life, such as access to a gun or consuming pills

□ Withdrawing from social contact and wanting to be left alone

□ Having mood swings, such as being emotionally high one day and deeply discouraged the next

□ Being preoccupied with death, dying or violence

□ Feeling trapped or hopeless about a situation

□ Increasing use of alcohol or drugs

□ Changing normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns

□ Doing risky or self-destructive things, such as using drugs or driving recklessly

□ Giving away belongings or getting affairs in order when there is no other logical explanation for doing this

□ Saying goodbye to people as if they won't be seen again

□ Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated, particularly when experiencing some of the warning signs listed above
