SCHOOL CALENDAR:

CALL TO ACTION
Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.
HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS
GETTING STUDENTS THE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS THEY NEED
A student who I do know came into my office this past week and told me she needed to see a mental health professional because she was feeling uninterested and uninspired - I thought that was something as she was in tune with her own mental health. The incident made me think about how many students out there are not in tune with their mental health. Please look for changes in your students and let one of our mental health professionals know if you see a child in distress. We have extensive mental health supports in the building - our social workers (Mr. Harding, Ms. Ronan, Ms. Masin, Ms. Covington), Teen Choice, Partnership With Children, Relationship Abuse Prevention Program, LIU Academic Coaches & Falcon Health Center - we just need to identify our students in crisis and get them the help they need.
HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE
MAKE SURE THERE IS A CHALLENGE PART OF AN ASSIGNMENT
Our two school goals are to make sure our students feel cared for and challenged. Continue to challenge students in your classes with ‘challenge’ activities as part of any assignment and/or project. Based on direct student feedback and parent calls, I always worry about our high performing students and whether they are appropriately challenged while we rightfully look out for our struggling students. We do not want to lose these students to other schools. Use Fashion Dollars to help motivate students to complete these challenges. The inventory at the FLY store is impressive and motivating.

NEW ITEMS:
SUPPORTING HSFI STUDENTS OBSERVING RAMADAN
This semester Ramadan is observed from Apr 1, 2022 to May 1, 2022. In the Islamic religion, Ramadan is a month-long time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heighted devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. The fast (sawm) begins at dawn and ends at sunset. This means our Muslim students and staff who practice will not be eating any food nor drinking any liquids between dawn and sunset. Be mindful that fasting can be difficult for some people and our Muslim students may be extra tired (especially at the beginning of the month). We ask that you make accommodations for our Muslim students to help support them during this important month.
We will be sending a Google Form to students where they can indicate to us that they will be observing Ramadan – we will share that information to you so you are aware of the participating students and they do not have to go to every one of their teachers to explain.
Thank you in advance for supporting these students.

Submitted by MS. LEIGHTON, Thank you to MS. WRIGHT & MS. VARRICHIO for “As a new teacher I am up to my neck this year and needed support with a student. Ms. Varrichio, I imagine she understands that which is why after speaking with her, she suggested I reach out to Ms. Wright. Monday morning Ms Wright was already in my room introducing herself to me and asking after a student, "What's happening with him? He has to pass. Which period is he with you?" and "I'm there!" I was going to email Ms Wright, but help came faster. Thank you, Danielle! The student walked out to the hall to speak with Ms. Wright. He came back into class not only ready to work, but responding to me verbally. He seemed to have a weight lifted from his shoulders. I am super grateful to her and happy and relieved for Ferrell. Thank you Ms. Wright & Ms. Varrichio.”
If you want to nominate a colleague who SOARRS, email me before Thursday and they will be acknowledged in our upcoming weekly bulletin.
