PBIS CALL TO ACTION
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TUTORING ONGOING
National Honor Society tutoring is ongoing – please encourage students to attend and submit referrals for at-risk students.  NHS tutoring takes place in the Charles Nolan Room in the Library both after 8th period / during 9th period and after 9th period / during 10th period.  Please post the NHS tutoring flyer in your classroom.

MARKING PERIOD 1 ENDS THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21
Make students aware where they stand in their classes as the marking period winds down – a good practice is to send out Jupiter Progress reports to your students and contact families of at-risk students.  Update your Jupiter class lists – some class lists are still not fully updated.

HELP NEEDED WITH LUNCH APPLICATIONS
We still have 500+ students who have not returned their lunch applications – the entire school community needs to contribute to this collection effort.  HSFI would look a lot different without the close to $1 million dollars that we receive based on this collection.

FEEDBACK FROM SUPERINTENDENT ROSALES
#1 – She agreed with our identification of the school’s Problem of Practice that focuses on rigor and differentiating instruction for this rigorous instruction.
#2 – Our immediate next step is to insure that all lesson plans have rigorous learning objectives.  From this visit and previous ones, she believes that some of the tasks that our students are assigned are not as rigorous as they can be.
#3 – Formative assessments need to be part of all lessons – the information gained from these assessments will help teachers design their lesson plans as well as influencing instructional moves during a class.  These assessments can also support our efforts around rigor – you will gain information on which specific students need to be challenged in particular areas.
These next steps represent cornerstones to well-planned lessons that will lead to improved student achievement.  We look forward to working together in these areas.

1ST SCHOOL LOCKDOWN ON MONDAY
We will conduct the first of four Lock-down Drills required by the City of New York. The drill will begin with an announcement over our public address system indicating "this is a soft lock-down drill, please take appropriate action." Once the drill has started, staff members will check the hallways outside of their classrooms for students, lock classroom doors, and turn the lights off. Once inside the classroom, teachers will direct the students in their care to move away from sight and maintain silence. The drill concludes when another announcement is made over the PA System, or when First Responders open the door.  Please take a moment to speak to your children about the importance of this drill. Since we work closely with the NYPD, students should not be alarmed if they see police in the building, supervising this exercise. Should you have any questions or concerns, you may contact Assistant Principal, Giovanni Raschilla at graschi@schools.nyc.gov

OP SCHEDULE THIS TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY
We are on OP schedule this coming Tuesday and Wednesday.  Student ambassadors, trained by Ms. Looser, will be visiting all 10th grade OPs to engage them in restorative justice activities.  Guidance counselors will be visiting their 12th grade OPs to go over a ‘Senior College Checklist.’  In addition, we will be using this valuable time to survey our students on a number of topics related to the school’s mission (copies of the surveys are attached to the email).  Many of the questions come from the NYC DOE’s Learning Environment Survey that is administered in the Spring.  We appreciate your help in facilitating these surveys – directions will be provided to you in your OP envelopes.  Students will be using their cell phones to take the surveys – the survey links will be sent to their HSFI emails and Jupiter Grade accounts.  A limited number of paper copies will be available for students who are unable to log on to their accounts.  Here is a brief summary of the 4 surveys:
#1 - Challenging Work @ HSFI
This survey will help serve as a data point for the school’s problem of practice that focuses on the delivery of rigorous instruction that is “customized, inclusive and motivating.”  Student feedback on the tasks they are given during class and on exams will help us with this problem of practice.
#2 - Student Connections @ HSFI
We want to know how connected our students feel to HSFI.  The first question is probably the most important, ‘Do you look forward to coming to HSFI every day?’  We will do appropriate follow-up with students who are not feeling good about coming here on a daily basis.
#3 - Academic Support @ HSFI
We want to know how much support our students feel in navigating the work that is expected of them.  We know that staff are here for students before school, during the day during non-teaching periods, and after school – it will be useful to hear from students their thoughts on our support of them.
#4 - Homework @ HSFI
The NYC Department of Education has requested that all schools develop a ‘Homework Policy.’  Homework is a widely discussed topic in education with many schools abandoning or setting strict time limits for homework.  The Academic and CTE Accreditation Committee will be working on the development of this school-wide policy, similar to the work we did last year on our grading policy.  This survey asks students about a number of topics including their thoughts on the value of homework, where they do homework and how long it takes to complete.

COOL THINGS AT HSFI
HSFI ON THE RACHEL RAY SHOW
In very exciting news, the High School of Fashion Industries will be featured on the Rachel Ray Show on Monday, October 17th on ABC (Channel 7) at 10am.  Many thanks to Ms. Dahill and Ms. David who made this possible and submitted the request to have Rachel Ray and her staff come to HSFI to do a much needed reorganization of the fabric room in the basement.  Additional thank yous to Ms. Carter, Ms. Ricci & Ms. Youngblood who were key players in the organization and execution of this event which also included 16 of our students.

135 HSFI 11th GRADERS HEADED TO HAMILTON BROADWAY SHOW
We are one of 13 NYC high schools selected to send students to the Hamilton Broadway show this school year.  This amazing opportunity was made possible by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.  The students selected needed to do a research project on the beginnings of US government that included an acting performance.

HSFI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOSTON MARKET FUNDRAISER
The HSFI Alumni Association Boston Market Costume Fundraiser will be October 28, 2016 from 4pm – 8pm at the Boston Market on 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues (closer to 8th Avenue).  All proceeds will benefit the HSFI students’ trip to Paris and Alumni College Scholarships.  A coupon will be distributed to you – present the coupon to the cashier when paying to activate the fundraising for the Alumni Association.
