WEEKLY BULLETIN for Week Beginning 6.6.22

HSFI STUDENT EXPRESSION ON THE UVALDE SHOOTING

Ms. Powell shared that one of her students, senior HSFI Art and Design major Lynna Guiracocha, had her watercolor painting published in the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper with an article written by Ms. Powell’s father - the article also includes a quote from her and the experience of her painting it in her Portfolio Development class the day after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Here is a link to the online version:  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/story/2022-06-03/your-say-school-shooting-texas

Here is an image of it in the actual newspaper - thank you so much Ms. Powell!

CALL TO ACTION

Every week, I will share with you a ‘Call To Action’ around our school goals that will help drive our work for that week.

HSFI ‘CARED FOR’ GOAL – RELATIONSHIPS & REALNESS

CONTINUED CHALLENGE OF TRANSITIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS

Transitions are tough for everyone - they are tough for us and definitely for our students - we have another transition approaching with the end of the school year.  Students are worried about graduation, failing classes, going to summer school and taking standardized Regents tests for the first time in years.  Please look for changes in your students and let one of our mental health professionals know if you see a child in distress.

HSFI ‘CHALLENGED’ GOAL – RIGOR & RELEVANCE

SIX DAYS LEFT IN THE THIRD & FINAL MARKING PERIOD OF THE SPRING TERM

We have six days left in the third and final marking period of the Spring term continues - please make sure students know where they stand in their classes and know what is required for them to receive the grades that they would like to receive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW ITEMS:

ENTERING FINAL GRADES FOR SPRING 2022 SEMESTER

Marking Period 3 ends on Friday June 10th and grades are due Wednesday June 15th, 2022 by 4PM. Grades are entered via STARS Classroom. Be sure to enter grades under Marking Period 3. Check that you have access to all of your classes in STARS classroom in advance of the grades due date.

After June 15th, teachers can update student grades only if that change results in a higher grade. No passing marks can be changed to a failing mark after June 15th to ensure adequate notice of non-graduating seniors and programming for summer school. To change a student’s grade, email programming.office@hsfi.us and cc the student’s counselor with the student name and updated grade.

Here is the memo outlining this process:

SENIOR AWARDS CEREMONY THIS TUESDAY EVENING

You are all cordially invited to attend HSFI’s Class of 2022 Awards Night this Tuesday June 7th at 5pm. Come support the class of 2022  as they receive awards in recognition of their academic achievement and school leadership. And support your colleagues being recognized by the top 10 graduates of the class of 2022.

If you’re unable to attend in person, you can watch the livestream: https://youtu.be/qAFtnr06Z2Q

Hope to see you there! All staff are invited to the event as we honor the resilience of our high performing senior graduates.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY THIS THURSDAY

This Thursday is a professional development day for staff with no students in attendance.

Check with your supervisor about the schedule for the day and whether or not you are remote or expected to be in person at the school.

RESTORATIVE PRACTICES TRAINING CONTINUES THIS TUESDAY

This Tuesday, June 7, we will continue our efforts to shift our school culture toward Restorative Practices where our students will collaborate with adults in redesigning our school's approach to discipline and consequences with an all day Restorative Practices training.  A group of students and staff will be part of this professional development series - this Tuesday’s session is the second of four scheduled sessions.  This group of students will hopefully be our future Peer Mediators / Conflict Resolution Specialists.  Our counselors, social workers, some of our supervisors and I will be doing the training with them.  We are extending the student – staff partnership that we have been developing on the HSFI Advisory Committee.

They are excused from class, but obviously responsible for all missed work.
