Shemeka Brathwaite, MSEd

Class of 2000

It was a dream comes true when I was accepted into the fashion design program at the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI). Since graduating in 2000, I can trace back many of my career successes with the foundation I have built at Fashion. After HSFI, I attended Syracuse University to major in fashion design with a minor in business management.  Later upon switching careers after being inspired from taking coaching certification courses at NYU, I earned a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from Fordham University.

Currently I work at the City University of New York (CUNY) and in my spare time I am a professional speaker. It was at HSFI that I was introduced to the world of professional speaking when I met the legendary Audrey Smaltz at the annual career fair during my freshmen year. I learned the value of networking and finding my niche. Serving as the Student Government President and participating in the Adopt-A-Student Mentoring Program built my business acumen, poise and presentation skills.
Today, the high energy messages I use to empower others stems from my background as a spoken word performing artist (participated in Fashion’s 1st poetry performance festival). I enjoy uniquely connecting diverse groups through transformational keynotes, training programs, virtual presentations and coaching. You can download a free copy of my eBook Work Purposefully and Maximize Your Value at my website at www.ShemekaBrathwaite.com

I live in Queens, New York with my husband and son where I believe in contributing my talents through active service in my community. My commitment has allowed me to serve on the local, regional and international level with several non-profit organizations. I look forward to serving as a mentor to current Fashion students and donating to the scholarship fund.

Campaign Internship
Lasher for Senate, a progressive, Democratic campaign for state senate in Manhattan is looking for Spring and Summer Interns. All interns will have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience with all aspects of a competitive Democratic primary campaign.
This internship is unpaid. Internship hours and schedules are flexible.

About Micah Lasher:
Micah Lasher has spent years fighting for social justice and economic justice and getting results for New Yorkers. Now he’s running for the State Senate to help make New York State a progressive model for the nation on key issues like reducing income inequality, expanding affordable housing, investing in public education, protecting our environment and reforming the criminal justice system.
Most recently, Micah served for 3 years as Chief of Staff to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman where he worked to stand up for tenants, working families, students and seniors. Micah’s government experience also includes work as Director of State Legislative Affairs for the City of New York and as an aide to Congress member Jerry Nadler on the West Side, helping residents of the district he now hopes to serve. Micah is a lifelong New Yorker and longtime Democratic activist. He’s a board member of the Community Service Society, New York’s leading anti-poverty organization, and of the Riverside Park Fund.

About the Internship Program:
Campaign interns will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of a political campaign, including policy, communications, field organizing and fundraising. Responsibilities will vary, but we strongly encourage interns to take on responsibilities in areas that interest them most.
The internship is open to current students and recent graduates. Strong interpersonal, communications and writing skills as well as an interest in New York politics and/or campaigns are necessary.
If interested, please send a resume OR cover letter to Ilana Maier at ilana@lasherforsenate.com with “Internship Application – YOUR NAME” in the subject line.
