THE ANSWER IS IN THE
ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with
colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices
with one another. Each week will focus
on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.
Here
are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of
intervisitations; all are focused on DIFFERENT
METHODS OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT.
In Ms. Adamczyk's AP English class, she used a gallery walk to get all students engaged in an new text, and to analyze challenging quotes.
In Ms. Adamczyk's AP English class, she used a gallery walk to get all students engaged in an new text, and to analyze challenging quotes.
In the Science
Department, Ms. Johnston created a research project for her forensics class. Students were asked to select a topic and create a lesson with specific
criteria.
In the Math
Department, Ms. Chung created a graphic organizer which she used within groups
so that the students could discover the rules of rotations and reflections in
Geometry.
BONUS:
Mr. Stampone, from
the Science department, created a step by step guide describing how to add
equations to a google form.

CALL TO ACTION
● START OF THE 3RD MARKING PERIOD
As of Wednesday, we will be in
the third marking periods – make sure you explain to your students that the
grades they receive at the end of January will be the grades that will go on
their transcripts and be seen by colleges.
It is a good time to remind them about National Honor Society homework help
available every day after 8th period and 9th period in
the Charles Nolan Room of the library.
● IMPORTANT HOLIDAY REMINDERS
(1) Many of our students do their
holiday shopping at our FLY school store – make sure you are giving out Fashion
Dollars every class, every day
(2) The holidays are a sensitive time
for many people, young and old, if you see a dramatic change in mood or behavior,
fill out a Guidance referral
(3) Let a counselor or supervisor
know if you see a student without a warm coat as they enter or leave the
building
(4) Secure your personal and DOE
valuables in your classrooms and offices
● MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND SING ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16
It would be wonderful if we had a
strong staff showing for our SING performances on Friday, December 16. Ms. Vega and our students have been
rehearsing non-stop and we need to support their efforts – bring friends and
families as we celebrate the performing arts at HSFI!
Our SING Coordinator, Ms. Vega, has set up a
GoFundMe account for our SING production scheduled for December 16 – the
website link is: https://www.gofundme.com/22xhg4c
Please considering contributing and spread the work
and link to family and friends!

KEY
REGULATIONS FROM THE NYC DOE
Conflicts
of Interest Laws
All NYCDOE employees are required
to comply with the City's Conflicts of Interest Laws and with Chancellor's
Regulation C-110. You will receive the annual email regarding holiday
gifts and conflicts of interest from mynyc@nyc.gov
in the next couple of weeks. Please note the following highlights for rules on
giving and receiving gifts that are covered in the email:
Gifts:
(1) Employees may not accept
gifts or tips for doing their jobs.
(2) Supervisors may not accept
holiday gifts from their subordinates, except gifts of negligible monetary
value, i.e., under $10. Supervisors may give holiday gifts to their
subordinates, as long as the gift is not unusually extravagant.
(3) Employees may not accept
offers of free attendance at holiday parties or events sponsored by
outside entities, such as those doing business with the city, unless they are
given permission to do so in writing by their agency head that their attendance
would further a legitimate city purpose related to their
job. Employees do not need permission to attend if they pay for the ticket
Guidance
on Holiday Displays
Please be aware of and sensitive to the significance of seasonal
observances and religious holidays as you work to foster mutual understanding
and respect for your community’s diverse religious, racial, ethnic, and
cultural heritages. Public schools may not endorse or promote a particular
religion or belief system. Please share these guidelines regarding the display
of cultural and holiday symbols with your staff:
(1) The primary purpose
of any displays should be to promote understanding and respect for the rights of
all individuals regarding their beliefs, values, and customs.
(2) The display of
holiday symbol decorations with secular dimensions is permitted. Permitted
symbols include, but are not limited to, Christmas trees, kinaras, dreidels,
menorahs, and the Star and Crescent. Displays that depict images of deities,
other religious figures, or religious texts are prohibited.
(3) Holiday displays must
not appear to promote or celebrate any single religion or holiday. Therefore,
any permitted symbol or decoration must be displayed simultaneously with other
symbols or decorations reflecting different beliefs or customs.
(4) All holiday displays
should be temporary in nature.
For issues concerning religious observance by students, please
refer to Chancellor’s Regulation A-630.
