THE ANSWER IS IN THE
ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with
colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices
with one another. Each week will focus
on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.
Here are some
highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of
intervisitations; all are focused on different ways teachers are
integrating The Writing Revolution into their classes.
In
Ms. Medina's Geometry class, she had her students practicing
"appositives" using math terminology.
In the English
Department, Ms. Thomas and Ms. Russell created a note taking and sentence
summary activity for a film they watched in class, and connected it to the
novel The Absolutely True
Diary of a Part Time Indian
In the Social Studies
Department Mr. Kalisch created a simplified appositive activity for his
ISS students, to help them better understand the concept.
BONUS:
Mr. Stampone, from
the Science department, created a step by step guide describing how to add
equations to a Google form.
To see these
activities and more join the HSFI Google+ Page found here:
*If any staff member
would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice,
send it to Ms. Paz at SPaz@schools.nyc.gov or Mr. Kearns at
kkearns@schools.nyc.go

CALL TO ACTION
● MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND SING THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16
It would be wonderful if we had a
strong staff showing for our SING performances this Friday, December 16 and
please consider giving extra credit to students to attend this performance. Ms. Vega and our students have been
rehearsing non-stop and we need to support their efforts – bring friends and
families as we celebrate the performing arts at HSFI!
● HOLIDAY SEASON CHALLENGING FOR STUDENTS
As
we all know, the holiday season is upon us, and often times our students may be
dealing with some sensitive issues during this time. If you should notice any
behavior changes with any of your students, please let the counselors know
either through a guidance referral (less serious matters) or speak directly to
them (more serious matters).
● OUR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING CONTINUES ON MONDAY
This coming Monday, December 12, 2016 we will
be running the next installment of our professional development sessions on
Social Emotional Intelligence.
These PD sessions will take during Periods 2,
4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 – you are welcome to attend any of these sessions depending on
your schedule – attendance at one of these sessions is required for all
teaching and guidance staff - the PD session that you attend is your choice.
I would encourage all staff, regardless of title, to attend one of these
sessions.
PD sessions during Periods 2, 4, 7 & 9 will
take place in Room 724.
PD sessions during Periods 5 & 6 will take
place in Room 822.
The sessions will be run by our own staff that
attended the Yale University conference during the summer – thank you to Lexi
Parisse, Amanda Padron, Chelsea Stambouly and Kelly Conaghan for stepping up to
run these sessions.
INAUGURAL
REPORT CARD CONFERENCING
On Thursday, December 15, HSFI staff
members will be meeting with every 9th graders to review the
students’ 2nd marking period grades.
It will be powerful when all our 9th graders will be
personally spoken to about their report cards and how they are feeling about
their experiences at HSFI. We will be
giving out Fashion Dollars and Certificates to students who have strong
academic performances and students will be asked to fill out goals in ‘Recovery
Contracts’ for classes in which they are struggling. Teachers will then be receiving these ‘Recovery
Contracts’ to follow-up with these struggling students.
Here are the guidelines to these
conferences:
If a student is passing all
courses:
□ Give “CONGRATULATIONS!” Certificate
highlighting their EFFORT
□ Tell student that 100 Fashion
Dollars will be placed in their account
□ Stress “Keep it up”
□ Engage in a Discussion with the Student – DO NOT JUST CONGRATULATE
THEM:
(1) Could your grades be higher?
(2) Goals for next report card
(3) Future plans – how is high
school part of that plan?
(4)Speak about their experiences
at HSFI – What do they like? Things they would like to be changed?
TAKE BRIEF NOTES ABOUT THEIR
RESPONSES TO THIS QUESTION (Likes / Changes)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a student is passing all but
one course:

□ Tell student that 75 Fashion
Dollars will be placed in their account

work” and “It’s not too late to pass all your classes.”
□ Engage in a Discussion with the Student:
(1) What happened in the class
you failed? Where are you getting stuck?
(2) Could your passing grades be
higher?
(3) Goals for next report card
(4) Future plans – how is high
school part of that plan?
(5) Are you involved in a club or
activity?
(6) Speak about their experiences
at HSFI – What do they like? Things they would like to be changed?
□ Tell students to go to a seat
and fill out a RECOVERY CONTRACT for the (1) Class you failed & (2) Any
classes that your grade was 70 and below / HAVE STUDENTS RETURN THE RECOVERY
CONTRACTS TO YOU
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If student is failing more than
one course:
□ Give “IT’S NOT TOO LATE!’
Certificate highlighting the need for greater EFFORT
□ Stress “It’s not too late to
get back on track.”
□ Engage in a Discussion with the Student:
(1) What happened in the classes
you failed? Where are you getting stuck?
(2) Could other grades be higher?
(3) Goals for next report card
(4) Future plans – how is high
school part of that plan?
(5) Are you involved in a club or

and fill out a RECOVERY CONTRACT for EACH of the (1) Classes you failed &
(2) Any classes that your grade was 70 and below / HAVE STUDENTS RETURN THE
RECOVERY CONTRACTS TO YOU
To honor the student’s
thoughtfulness about next steps in their classes, we will be asking teachers to
do the following:
#1
Review
the goal the student has written for accuracy – is the suggested behavior
change a priority for the student or is there something else that would be more
effective?
#2a
If the goal is accurate, verbally
acknowledge receipt of the goal. “I see
you are prepared to succeed by (arriving on time every day, completing all
classwork).”
#2b
If the goal is not fully
accurate, meet with the student to add further suggestions on the back
of the goal.
#3
Reiterate to the student how you
will support their efforts.

Guidance
on Holiday Displays
Please be aware of and sensitive to the significance of seasonal
observances and religious holidays as you work to foster mutual understanding
and respect for your community’s diverse religious, racial, ethnic, and
cultural heritages. Public schools may not endorse or promote a particular
religion or belief system. Please share these guidelines regarding the display
of cultural and holiday symbols with your staff:

of all individuals regarding their beliefs, values, and customs.
(2) The display of
holiday symbol decorations with secular dimensions is permitted. Permitted
symbols include, but are not limited to, Christmas trees, kinaras, dreidels,
menorahs, and the Star and Crescent. Displays that depict images of deities,
other religious figures, or religious texts are prohibited.

not appear to promote or celebrate any single religion or holiday. Therefore,
any permitted symbol or decoration must be displayed simultaneously with other

1. Computer Science
Week December 5-11 @ HSFI's Library's Annual Hourofcode.org was celebrated by Ms. Thomas and Ms. Russell's English
classes, assisted by Ms. Wright. Students coded with Disney, Minecraft
and Flappy Bird then heard about the genre of Science Fiction: Frankenstein,
Frankenstein's Cat, The Uglies, Warm Bodies, The Handmaids Tale, Ms. Marvel and
the Graphic Novel Screwball and many more. Many students said that they were
going to continue to learn coding on their own atcode.org with free,
