#1 – TREMENDOUS COLLABORATION ON DISPLAY AT HSFI
Thank you to all the staff that have welcomed me into your department focus groups and interdisciplinary Professional Learning Communities  My visits have reinforced the fact that I work with an incredible group of dedicated professionals whose collaborative efforts continually benefit our students.  It is impressive to watch you make such thoughtful decisions on what you are teaching, how you are teaching it and how you are going to assess the results of these efforts.  It is great to see you bringing in student work as the basis to your decision-making.  In these teacher teams, there have been strong voices for struggling students whether they have an IEP or English is their second language.  What is clear is that our students across the board are struggling with ‘Analysis.’  Getting to analysis is quite challenging for our students and requires strong content knowledge – we need to keep the mindset that all our students can master analysis and we need concentrate our efforts on helping them get there.  THANK YOU for your commitment to our students and one another!

#2 – GLENN SEARS SCHOLARSHIP EVENT
This coming Friday, November 13, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 821, you are invited to a special event to formally announce and celebrate the establishment of the Glenn R. Sears Scholarship Fund at the High School of Fashion Industries.  If you are interested in making a tax deductible donation to the Glenn R. Sears Scholarship Fund, please make your check payable to The High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) with the notation “Glenn R. Sears Scholarship Fund” on the memo line on your check.  Checks may be given directly to Ms. Ianniello in Room 819.  We would like to thank all of you for your condolences and expressions of sympathy and for your generous donations to this Scholarship Fund in Glenn’s memory.  The Glenn R. Sears Scholarship Fund is being established to remember and continue Glenn’s impact on his colleagues, students and the school by acknowledging the efforts of, and supporting each year, the continued learning of two deserving HSFI seniors – one of whom will be a Special Needs student –who will be pursuing either a college education or post-high school career training.  Our lives are all enriched for having known Glenn!

#3 – SOME PROGRESS ON LUNCH APPLICATIONS – URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!!!
Your efforts have reduced the number of students who need to return their lunch application to under 400 students.  This is still a significant number and as of now HSFI would NOT qualify for the $1 million dollars in Title I funding that we receive through the collection of these lunch applications.  As of now our school budget for next year will be $1 million dollars less resulting in huge cuts to staff and services.  You have your list of your students – please follow up with them every day.  Many students will say they returned their application; unfortunately paper forms take 2-3 weeks to process.

#4 – HSFI, WE HAVE A PROBLEM: STUDENT LATENESS
The lateness of our students to school continues to be a major issue.  This past Thursday and Friday we began sending phone calls home to parents of students who were late to school.  The numbers are not good – we still have around 600 students late to school – that is ONE-THIRD of the school.
Under the auspices of reinforcing positive behavior, we also began depositing 5 Fashion Dollars into student FashionSoarrs accounts for students who were on time to school – these deposits will take place every day for on time students.
Here is our lateness update:

We are in it for the long haul in combatting lateness with our students.  There are actions that you can take to support these efforts to combat lateness:
□ Follow up with the READINESS portion of your grading policy
□ Bubble in lateness for students late to class on the blue and white attendance sheets
□ Have activities and assessments set up at the beginning of class to motivate students to get to class on time – THIS IS ESPECIALLY CRITICAL FOR 1ST & 2ND PERIOD CLASSES
□ Use Fashion Dollars to positively reward students who are on time – remember, the students who are late will see the on time students getting rewarded and want to get those rewards

#5 – ADDITIONAL COMPUTER LABS OPEN
Between daily assignments, college essays and Common Core tasks, our students need additional access to computers and the ability to print.  This ‘Digital Divide’ based on income is a major societal issue – here is a recent article from the NY Times about this:
Please inform your students about the following schedule where will provide this additional access:

#6 – VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Monday, November 9
webinar (n) A webinar is a seminar or workshop in which the facilitator and participants view the same screen at the same time. Usually, the webinar has an audio component that the facilitator controls and functionality that allows participants to chat by entering text, answering polls, raising their hands and asking questions.
Tuesday November 10
flipped class (n) A flipped class has the same meeting pattern as an in-person course, but lectures and other content are delivered online, and in-class time is devoted entirely to discussion.
Thursday, November 12
netiquette (n) the etiquette (civil and reasonable, behavior) for the internet.  A few netiquette rules: Before you respond, read everything in the online class discussion thread to avoid repetition.  Compose brief and clear responses on an academic level. (Don’t overshare.)  Respect your online classmates; criticism must be constructive and well-articulated. (Avoid sarcasm completely in an online classroom.)
 Friday, November 13
proactive (adj.) acting in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes. To be proactive when committing to an online college course, students should be ready before the course goes live, which means having the required browsers, hardware and software, as well as knowledge of tech support resources at the school.

#7 – FASHION DOLLAR DISTRIBUTION GUIDELINES
Fashion Dollar are now a valuable commodity – we having students going out to lunch and we had our first Chipolte after school party took place this past Thursday - we need to maintain their value and guard against inflation.  Below is a chart that outlines how many Fashion Dollars should be given for specific positive behaviors.  This chart will be distributed to students this week.  Moving forward, do not go beyond these guidelines to maintain consistency.
Please encourage your students to deposit their tokens – we are running low.  If you out of tokens, please use FashionSoaars.com for the distribution of Fashion Dollars.

This is text from an email I received from the Falcon Health Center Director, “we are getting a number of students coming in to the health center with pieces of paper, teddy bears, hello kitty as passes.”  Use the correct health center pass – we are directing the health center to not accept students until they have this pass.  Here is what the correct pass looks like:
