Enjoy this photo of the sun rising at HSFI taken by Ms. Russell – thank you Ms. Russell for sharing!

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices with one another.  Each week will focus on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.

Here are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of intervisitations; all are focused on The Writing Revolution.

In the Science department, Ms. Castro created a combination of a fragment/sentence activity as well as a scrambled sentences activity to emphasize students' knowledge of earthquakes.

In the Math department, Mr. Kilpatrick and Ms. Garcia created a TWR review activity for the end of the marking period, which also incorporates an error analysis involving the mood meter.

In the English Department, Ms. Bohner created sentence expansion/combining activities for her students to demonstrate knowledge of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

To see these activities and more join the HSFI Google+ Page found here:

*If any staff member would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice, send it to Ms. Paz at SPaz@schools.nyc.gov or Mr. Kearns at kkearns@schools.nyc.gov

IMPORTANT REGENTS REMINDERS

BE AN ACTIVE PROCTOR
As you well know, Regents/RCT exams begin on Tuesday, January 24.  These are high stakes exams for our students so we need to be at the top of our game with our proctoring – in the classrooms, on reserve and the hallways.  It would be a HUGE help if you could remind all students throughout the week about not having cell phone and electronic equipment on them when they are taking their tests and to place these devices in their lockers.

REGENTS ROOM READINESS
The following classrooms will be utilized during the administration of the NYS Regents next week:
Second Floor: 225, 229
Third Floor: 319, 321, 323, 325, 327
Seventh Floor: 702, 722, 723, 725, 726, 740, 742, 743
Ninth Floor: 902, 906, 921, 923, 925, 940
Teachers who don't teach in these rooms can leave their rooms intact.
It is critical that you have your classroom ‘Regents Ready’ by the end of the school day on Monday, January 23.  Before a test can be given in any room, teachers must prepare the rooms to the following specifications - Please assist all proctors by preparing your classrooms:
● Desks must be arranged in straight rows.
● Teachers must clear desks and shelves under the desks of all books, papers, and other materials.
● Teachers must completely cover or remove all charts or remove maps pertinent any subject matter being tested. Teachers must remove all board work.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL REMINDERS
3rd MARKING PERIOD DIRECTIONS
Please look over the attached documents outlining the end of 3rd marking period instructions.  Grades are due on Thursday, January 26th at 4:00pm.

HOMEWORK POLICY IN EFFECT FOR SPRING TERM
We are all set with our HW policy to begin the Spring 2017 term.  The current draft was sent to you via email.  In addition to your feedback, the policy has been developed and approved by our Academic & Career and Technical Education committee, Student Government, the Parents’ Association & the School Leadership Team.  The policy will be emailed to all students and families – we will make sure students get a copy of the policy before the Spring term begins.  Make sure your HW policies align to the school-wide policy for the Spring term.  We will continually reflect on the policy and make changes as necessary.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATES
SMART BOARD SOFTWARE TO INSTALL AT HOME
You received an email from Mr. Tallone about installing Smart Board software on your home devices - on the staff homepage are the instructions to installing smart note software on your home computer. Please follow the instructions and let Mr. Tallone know if you have any problems.  Do not under any circumstances download the file at school.   It will slow down the network and cause schoolwide problems.
GOOGLE APP WITH HOW TO VIDEOS
Below is a link to a new google app. It is used like an extension in chrome and has tons of videos on how to use many google programs. Use the link and add it to your hsfi account. (you must be logged into hsfi to use it.) You can even download it at home.    All of HSFI current Tech guides are on connected to the app.
If you have questions, please speak to your supervisor.

AIR CONDITIONER CAMPAIGN MOMENTUM
Please keep up the momentum of our Air Conditioner campaign – we have an amazing opportunity to reach our goal with the anonymous donor that will match our donations up to $50,000.
Let our students know how important it is to take ownership of this campaign AND how unbearable it gets in classrooms when it’s hot.  $25 from each HSFI student who get us very close to the $50,000 goal.
We need to do our part in spreading the word and getting donations whether you have an AC or do not have an AC in your classroom or office – some people I have gotten to donate include guys I play basketball with, the person who I purchase car insurance from and quite a few members of the Bronx Science Graduating Class of 19__ (no need to identify the year).

Please take a minute and fill out the form.   We are meeting with the contractors who worked on the new PA system and need to know if any of the new clocks are not working

NEW ELEVATOR CARDS
Pick up your new elevator cards from Ms. Ianniello in Room 819.  Students will be picking up their new elevator cards as well – make sure students present their elevator cards.  Here are the rules they (and their parents) agreed to as part of their contracts:
□ You must show respectful behavior to all other HSFI community members in the elevator
□ You, alone, can use the pass – you are not allowed to bring a friend(s) with you onto the elevator
□ When you get on the elevator (which will be color-coded), you need to show your pass to any staff member in the elevator
□ If you lose your elevator pass, the first replacement is free – after that you have to pay for a replacement which will be $10
□ You must return your pass at the end of the school year or when it expires (if it is a temporary pass)
□ You must submit a medical letter from your doctor at the beginning of every school year
The consequences of breaking these rules will be the following:
□ You will lose your elevator pass privileges
□ For seniors, your cap and gown for graduation will be held until it is returned

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.
LEXICAL ARRAY: from ROTE to FATHOM
Monday, January 23
Fathom: (v) to comprehend a mystery or problem; to understand what something means after thinking about it carefully. Galileo insisted that inquiring minds could fathom the universe. What is “difficult to fathom — is what happens in the minds of people living through an age of upheaval.”

ADDITIONS TO THE BLOG
If you are interested in adding something to the Weekly Bulletin Blog, please email Angela Ianniello – AIanniello@schools.nyc.gov – by Wednesday of that week.  Submissions emailed after this deadline will be placed in the following week’s Blog.
