THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices with one another.  Each week will focus on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.

Here are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of intervisitations; all are focused on different methods of integrating The Writing Revolution into English and Math classes.

Ms. Chung and Ms. Medina used sentence expansion strategies in their Geometry class.
Ms. McGoldrick used quick outlines to help her students analyze the graphic novel Persepolis.

Ms. Thomas and Ms. Russell used multiple TWR strategies to help their ninth grade students’ work through Romeo and Juliet.

To see these activities and more join the HSFI Google+ Page found here:

*If any staff member would like to share a lesson, activity, or best practice, send it to Ms. Paz at SPaz@schools.nyc.gov or Mr. Kearns at kkearns@schools.nyc.gov

PBIS CALL TO ACTION

HAVE AN AWESOME 2017!!!
Health & Happiness to the entire HSFI Community!!!

3 FULL WEEKS LEFT IN THE FALL TERM
We are in the homestretch of the Fall term with 3 weeks of classes until Regents.  Make sure students understand that the grades they receive at the end of January are the grades that colleges and universities will see.  Encourage students to take advantage of staff tutoring and tutoring from our National Honor Society students.

FOLLOW UP TO REPORT CARD CONFERENCING FOR 9TH GRADERS
Please connect with 9th graders that filled out ‘Recovery Contracts’ -  On these contracts, students identified areas they needed help in to succeed and areas they needed to improve upon themselves.  Take some time to review these contracts with those individual students.
To honor the student’s thoughtfulness about next steps in their classes, we will be asking teachers to do the following:
#1
Review the goal the student has written for accuracy – is the suggested behavior change a priority for the student or is there something else that would be more effective?
#2a
If the goal is accurate, verbally acknowledge receipt of the goal.  “I see you are prepared to succeed by (arriving on time every day, completing all classwork).”
#2b
If the goal is not fully accurate, meet with the student to add further suggestions on the back of the goal.
#3
Reiterate to the student how you will support their efforts

VTODs FOR THE WEEK
Our VTODs will now be lexical arrays of terms that are connected in meaning but often reflect differences in tone, mood, or levels of intensity. For example:  peek, glance, scowl, stare, and glare.
LEXICAL ARRAY: LOUD from SONOROUS to OBSTREPEROUS
Tuesday, January 3
Raucous: (adj.) 1.  Sounding unpleasantly loud; the woman’s raucous laughter in the quiet restaurant made many diners turn around.   2. Impolite, noisy, and violent.   A raucous crowd gathered to protest the unpopular court decision.
Wednesday, January 4
Vociferous: (adj.) expressing feelings or opinions in a very loud or forceful way.    The decision was made over their vociferous objections. He returned to the plate in the fourth inning, this time to more vociferous booing after a home run by the other team.
Thursday, January 5
Strident: (adj.) 1. Harsh sounding; loud and insistent; urgently expressed.  The strident tone of his voice revealed his anger.   “Protests against the Viet Nam war and President Lyndon Johnson, himself, had grown so strident by 1968 that he wisely chose not to run for reelection.”
Friday, January 6
Obstreperous: (adj.)   noisy and refusing to be restrained or controlled; unruly.  An obstreperous crowd of late-arriving fans tried to push ahead in the line, yelling at security officers for holding them back.
